Score card question???????
I was recently at a large UKC sanctioned hunt were they posted score cards for all to see the next day. So here is the question. I seen a score card that had a clear cast winner. 300 plus points more than the next closest plus point member in his cast. You could see where the Master of hounds highlighted him as cast winner. Then you can see where the Master of hounds scratched him for not filling out his score columns on his part of the card. Master of hounds then awards the next highest member in the cast as the cast winner. Is this how its done now? Use to be an incomplete card was thrown out, all scratched, I thought.
im not saying I know a lot of the rules but I thought the judge fill in the filed score card at the end. that's how it is when I hunting in a hunt. just look it over to make sure it add up right and them sing it. if im wrong please let me know how it should go so I know next time I go to a hunt. thanks
There are several possibilities and without more information you can only guess on what happened. Maybe the dog was scratched but continued to hunt, maybe the handler failed to sign the score card, and so on and so on.

SCRATCHING OFFENSES
Look on the back of the score card under scratching offenses, Rule 6y, if scorecard lacks initials and/or point values in strike and tree columns dog[s] affected will be scratched.
it's right in the rules, I'd say the handler messed up
Also rule 8b says it is the handler's responsibility to check their score before signing scorecard.

Only the dog whose points were not marked properly is scratched. It is not the judges responsibility to make sure it's done properly it's each individual handlers responsibility for their dog

The Master of hounds gave the win to the 2nd highest score in the cast because his was filled out. A scratched dog can't continue to hunt. A not signed scorecard use to result in a scratched card.
To simplify the question. Are scorecards thrown out without them being filled out properly?
Example: 4 dog cast. All hunt 2 hours. All have plus points. Dog 1 has 500 plus, dog 2 has 300 plus, dog 3 has 225 plus and dog 4 has 50 plus. Dog 1 is listed as cast winner. All handlers sign card. Card turned in to Master of hounds. Master of hounds highlights dog 1 as cast winner. Master of hounds then notices dog 1's plus, minus and circle columns are not filled out, so he scratches dog 1. Master of hounds then awards dog 2 as the cast winner. Is this a correct action taken by the Master of hounds? Or should the card be thrown out? What is the correct action in this case?
Can there be a winner by default because of error on the scorecard?
I haven't seen the card in question but would guess there were points in the strike and tree column that were not valued. That would result in the dog being scratched and not considered for placement. The cast win would be awarded to the next high scoring dog in the cast, whose scores are complete.
if you would listen to the master of hounds checklist we read aloud before every cast call out you would know that this is part of the checklist tks butch glass

If a master of hounds can point out to a cast member that he failed to sign card and allow him to sign it, why wouldn't they do the same with the allowing the cast member to fill out the columns. Or throw the card out. To win a cast because of paperwork just doesn't seem right. I would rather see a card thrown out versus giving it to the second high scoring dog of the cast. Young kids could easily be taken advantage of along with many other folks. I have seen many judges that would not do that, but I have also seen plenty that would. If a judge turns in an incomplete card then take away his judging privledges. He obviously ain't very good at it, if he can't see that a score card is filled out proper. Just my opinion.
