female in heat

well last night we made a drop and my 11 month old mojo female opened and run track for the first time its only about the 5th time she has been out but then we noticed the male dogs smelling her a bunch and that she was swelled. how long before I should hunt her again and let her be around male dogs again? im excited and want to hit thee woods some more because of how good she did last night

I thought all dog owners knew this before owning dogs but is generally 3 weeks. Watch for a swelling belly in the next 30-63 days. And personally I think you should have known this before buying a female and I understand that accidents happen but this is a very crucial fact about dogs that all owners should know, and she will more than likely come in heat twice a year

I wait three to four weeks after they dry up. Better safe than sorry. I hunt them alone or with other females a couple weeks after but wash them down and spay a pheromone concealer around their backside for fear of coyotes or other dogs in the woods, even then it's risky. Also many females are different and she may come out real quick especially since its her first time.

Look for it around her 1st birthday, ( you already know she is in at 11 months, and look for it again around 6 months from now) After than you should be able to at least know when to be looking for signs of her coming in season. I recently bought a 14 month old Wild Card/Ole South Stylish Rebel female, and I nearly missed her coming in season...I had suspected she had come in closer to her first birthday....now at 15 months, she came in...so even us guys that have been doing this for 30 years make mistakes too.

I would pen her up away from any male dogs, if you can put a female between her and another male in your kennels, I would do that. Hopefully she isn't preggo if it's not what you wanted. Otherwise, I hope you like the males you are hunting with her! Good luck man, let us know how it turns out.

She's prolly already pregnant, I had one that never swelled, never bled but about 63 days after I went hunting with a friend a ways away, she has some pups... I think you should do a little Google searching on a dogs reproductive system, gestational periods and other things like that,you'll prolly learn a lot of things as well as get a lot of info you may not get here. I was not trying to be rude but hey kid, knowing such things is part of being a responsible dog owner.
Also you should get a kennel for when she's in heat so that the neighbors dog doesn't wander over and knock her up, and putting a top on it will stop her, and males, from climbing over, and if you could do a double fence you'll be even better off cuz, even though its hard, they can breed through a fence.

General rule of thumb is, one week coming in heat, one week in, and one week coming out. So the whole process is going to take 3 weeks. The first week you will see the start of the swelling and bleeding, then after 7-10 or so days after that initial bleeding they will stay swollen and the bleeding will stop. This is the period were they will start accepting a male and this is the peak breeding time. After about 15 or so days she will start bleeding again and the swelling will go down. So kind of figure about 3 weeks. I would just put her up for that time, cause her hormones are all over the chart and they can be pretty goofy at this time. It is frustrating, but it comes with hunting a female.

Put her away from all males. Just saying.

Most of us older houndsmen know these things from being around animals all our life, but now its a different world and people dont think and do like they used to. So in other words RED REBEL get down off your high horse and cut the kid some slack, I bet you had to be taught a few things in times past and by your attitude you probably was a know it all and had to be corrected a few times.

Dalyn watch her closely to see if she bleeds, some dogs swell before they bleed and if she starts bleeding then she wont be pregnant. It takes a dog a few days to come into standing heat, which is a term to describe the point they will stand to be bred. Think back and remember how she acted with the male dogs, did she curl her tail up and throw her bottom up like she was really hot, thats how they do when they will stand. There is a good chance she wasnt ready but there is a chance she was too. Just remember this comes around every 6 months so mark your calender and good luck.

You are exactly right gunslinger not everyone knows all this stuff anymore. Alot of people need to be taught this stuff. As for RED REBEL i think that it is pretty funny when you talk about being a responsible dog owner. I remember a couple years ago at AO my wife and I were camped near you and you left your dog in 100 degree weather with no water or shade. After watching your poor dog suffer a while we took care of your dog. So I dont think you have any room to talk.
