Artificial Insemination...(effects on male?)

What are the effects, if any, on a male that is collected? I am asking because Ive always heard that you shouldnt breed a young male, because they will only think about females. Im sure that is not the case with all dogs, but I thought, why chance it? So, I was wondering if there were any negative effects with AI.??? The male dog just turned 2 years old. Thanks....Jim Harper

Well I used to have several bulldogs and now I only have about 7 but I can tell you when I walk into the kennel the male are the first thing to want your attention. Dont do it if you want them for pets because they become awful clingy after you collected them a time or two. LOL

I don't think it is an issue. We keep our males in the stud barn away from our brood bitch barn and we have absolutely no issues. We have several intact males in our house with intact females and have no issues unless a female is in season.

I only want to have him drawn once. I want to see what he may reproduce. Ive been in the situation where I looked back and regretted not breeding a dog a couple more times. Bingo is young, and I really dont want him to do any live breeding for now, though I havent ruled it out. My concern is Bingos age. Thanks for the replies so far. Keep em coming. ...Jim

Ive done both live and collection on my male and have not noticed any difference in his actions or mannerisms, except of course when a female is in heat, but that is normal. the live breeding was almost 3 yrs ago, there has been a collection/store and 2 AI's since then with no adverse effects (humping everything, etc). there is less risk of disease with collection/AI since there is no physical touching, less risk of physical damage to both dogs during the act of as well. as long as whomever is doing your AI knows what they are doing that is the way to do...less stress on the dogs too.

We collect and ship chilled semen periodically with no effects on the male. We have had Dean collect and store that morning then go hunt and win a cast that night.

I have seen someone breed a hound naturally too young, in my opinion, as the young hound thought everything near him needed to be his girlfriend! !
