I start taking mine to the woods at 6 months. I take them expecting nothing, so if they go I'm tickled and if they stay close thats ok too. I don't expect much until after they are a year old. I think my next one isn't going to the woods until it is a year old though.

The most important training that a pup can get is from 6 weeks to 12 weeks old. This is where the pup needs to be taught to learn your comands. In my opinion this area has a big role in becoming a successful hound. By 10 weeks old I like to take walks in the woods with them. I usually have mine in the woods at four months old. Alot of guys think that is way to early but it has worked for me.

Here is one at 12 weeks old learning to cross creeks

Here is one that treed by himself the first night to the woods at 4 months old

Again at 9 months old

Again at 15 months old

If hounds are trained with older hounds I think they should be singled out no later then 15 months old. JMO

I agree with the six month lightly, eight months medium, ten months pour the hunting on them theory.

Now if that pup is going every step and treeing split with a coon at seven months old, I think you can turn it up a notch on one of those. Paying attention to the progress of your pup will go a long way in how little or how much hunting you pour onto a particular pup. Just my opinion.
