How long

Do you give a pup. I have one that will bark and rig deer and squirrels. Nothing more. He is 11 months old. He's a redtick an comes from really good bloodlines. Well know bloodlines.On paper you would think he's the next world champion. It's hard to tell how many trophies this bloodline hasn't piled up. I have tried with coon tails and coon hides and even caged coon. He will play with the tail and that's it. He won't do nothing with a caged coon with or without other pups.He will stand at his box and bark up the tree he is under at a squirrel that has a nest over top of him from time to time. He will bark at deer over on the hill in the evenings. I don't want to break him of the squirrel or deer until he does coon. So I thought maybe he is scared of the cage. I have turned coons out and he just watches them run. I take him out in a field about 2-3 miles away from roads and houses and it doesn't make a difference. I just don't think he's not interested. I feel I have given him every chance and tried just about everything. Anyone else know what I could try. I have trained my other pups the same way I am doing this one and the others have done good. Also it took the first 6 months that I have had him to get him to lead. I've heard of slow starters but wow.

I don't see anything about turning him loose in the woods. Have you? All the other stuff you mentioned, all of it comes AFTER atleast a dozen trips to the woods where the dog runs loose for and hour or two, learns the woods and explores. Your pup may be intimidated b his surroundings because he hasn't run loose enough. Just my thoughts.

Pup

He has been in the woods behind my house and when I take the other dogs out for walks in behind my house. It took 4 months to go more than 50' from his kennel or dog box. I really like this pup. That is the only reason I haven't gotten rid of him. I let him run loose here at my house all the time. After I finally got him to lead I hardly ever lead him once I get him out away from the house where he won't run back. My kids take him out in the yard with coon tails and a old rag just trying to get him interested. He won't do anything till you drop the rag or tail then he grabs it and runs off with it and lays it down.

When Sam brought a pup in we walked him for 17 mths.
he was a big dog around 93lbs.when he was 3 i was still
walking it till he hit a track well Sam turned 16 went to
trashing and i got rid of the dog.he would have made the
right person a good dog but it wasnt for me.

The best thing I have ever had on a lead was 2 yrs old before he started. I done everything drags, cage coon etc. One night he clicked and that was it potlicker to coondawg. I have a well bred redtick here that I'm fixing to start and he turned 2 in April. He hasn't been messed with so I have no problems to correct.

Have got a young female 11mo. She is not a early starter like her brother he was running treein squirrels with fiest at 4 to 6 mo.And has treed his own coons wild at 9 10 mo's, she was not interested in cage coon scared, got on here, alot of people told me to let her mature and not compare her, she is finally showing interest in treein the house cat and opening on it and treeing some finally, believe she'll make it now but was comparing her to much to her siblings, good mouth and now is ready to start, so if you like the pup give it another month and for now just keep takin it out,. Have you had it out at night yet? If it is in em it will come out. Good Luck, and what is it out of? had a male out of other bred hounds he was very slow and at 2 finally treeing coons but wasn't my kind,sold him to a guy who is just a pleasure hunter and he likes him ok.

LUCK-Is when opportunity & Preperation Meet

I have seen several pups that when you take them out of the pen or take them to a strange area to turn out a coon or try to work them on a cage coon they show no interest in the coon at all. Most of the time they are to busy exploring or just glad to be running free to focus on anything. I have had real good luck doing either of the following.

1. I will set a cage coon somewhere kinda out of the way in the yard, somewhere where the pup doesn't see me putting it there. Then I just let the pup out of the pen and go back in the house. I let them discover the coon on there own. Often times when the just discoverer it on their own without the distraction of being in a strange place or you standing there and encouraging them they will bark at this strange intruder in their yard.

2. this is kind of similar but instead of letting the pup out I just walk up to the pen and set a cage coon right next to their kennel the closer you can get it to their food dish and or house the better. Lots of pups are very protective of their homes.

In either case if the pup starts barking at the coon I just watch them from a distance. If they have been continuously barking and been fully focused on the coon for around five to ten minutes I quitely walk up and hook a leash or a piece of rope to the cage. Then I start dragging the cage around. Whatever gets the pup fired up! If they are actively chasing the cage and baying then I drag it to a tree and throw the rope over a branch and hoist it up the tree. Mosr pups will transition right to treeing. If all of this goes good I leash the pup and spend about five minutes petting them up and letting them tree. Then I take thwm back to the kennel and leave them there for at least a week. I like to let them think about it for a couple days. I have had several late starting pups that just plain ignored cage coons for well past the point many other peopke would have given up on them. But one day it is just like a switch gets flipped in their brains and they will go nuts over a coon. I wouldn't give up until about a year and half old, but that is just me. I just keep exsposing them to coon about once every month and in the mean time I just take them hunting with the other dogs and let them run loose as much as possible. You never know when the stars or whatever will align and the perfect set of circumstances will present themselves and throw that switch in the pups brain. As long as they are not scared of the coon I feel there is still hope. Good Luck.

I really don't want to put it on here what it is out of due to people wanting to bash a certain breed or bloodline. I Was just simply wanting to see what else I should try. Thanks alot

How long

Wrll my pup was barking the other night. Went down to where I have him tied out next to some other dogs. He was barking every breath and was pulling on chain,so I turned him loose and he crossed under the neighbors fence and got up on a tree and behold. The tree has a possum in it. He actually showed a little sign of life.
