Bitch Bleeding Question?
I've got a bitch here who has never been bred, she's coming 3 y/o, she started bleeding and stopped 12 days later for 4 days. I bred her on the 13th and 14th day (I prefer to breed on the 11th and 13th, but she wasn't ready) after 4 days of no bleeding, she is back dripping today. I haven't ever had this happen before and was just curious about it.

i've seen about everything over the years and have seen what you are talking about but don't really know what causes it. i have bred some that had pups and some that didn't. seen some that would take a dog and some that wouldn't their whole cycle. wish i could give you better info but i just try them and see what happens.

Yes that does happen.Usually in my experience that is just about the time they are ready to be bred. The color will also change to a watermelon color around the 10 or 11 day.I use days as a guide line but don't live by it .I am more interested in watching the changes in swelling , bleeding,And the way the female acts when touched. Some will stand early but are not really ready to be bred.Others go through long cycles but you still need to catch that right time.I had one that had a real short window of opportunity to get her bred. She would only show any sign of heat about 7 days.
I've had several that bled the whole way through out their cycle, bred them and got pups. They say that blood acts as a spermicide, but you can't prove that by me. I've seen too many females bred that were still bleeding and still had pups. Really, there is no 'NORMAL', there is only normal for each dog. Wish you luck kiddo, I think you will be ok.

i had a red gyp that wouldnt breed i had a buddy take her tried to get her bred to his good male dog from the first sign of her heat cycle till she went out never would take a dog had her for 5 yrs never would take a dog she would have produced some good pups but just couldnt get her to breed
Thanks everyone, she was standing fine on the 11th day but he just wasn't into it. On the 13th day he was crazy for her so I'm assuming that she wasn't smelling "right" until then. She stood and got bred on the 13th and 14th days. Both hounds are nice coon dogs and I really like the way their bloodlines mix, I hope she has pups.

Male dogs know when they are ready, whether the female 'thinks' she is or not. My old gyp, Autumn will except the male from the 7th day all the way up until the 16th day. She is truly a 'slut'! If you count 63 days from first breeding, she always went 4 days late in delivering puppies, so that proves she wasn't 'ready', just a brazon hussy!

Hope it works out for you! I agree, that male knows! Never seen that happen though!

Never seen that happen either...but as others have said, after my experience breeding my NTCH female this month I will be more inclined to trust the male! I had him at my place for a week trying to get her bred, when she "should" have been ready according to when my other half supposedly saw her come in heat. Male didn't pay a lot of attention to her, or made half-hearted attempts...the Monday and Tuesday after that was totally different! Good luck with your breeding Clyde!
