New York Rabbit derby, play by play..
I'll try to give you some updates through out the day as I can. Team "Legend" departed the" Casa Riccardo" at approx 7:30am. With a team of 6 veteran NY rabbit hunters, Im sure the lead will fly! I sent them to one of my favorite spots up past Niagara Falls.. I hope Glenn, dont want to try to go over in a barrel???
After a few hours of homemade wine and traditional Buffalo wings and pizza last night, he seemed a bit sluggish this morning.
If I had a nickel for every time the legend has said "wow, look at all this snow" or "Man, its cold here", I could retire.
This should be a record turn out... We are at 20 degrees, no wind and a fresh coating of snow, making this a awesome day to hunt in these parts after minus temps for close to a week. I will report back after I hear more.. I have alot of cooking to do, so gotta run!
Rick

When its no longer fun, sell the hounds and take up Golf.
Reports in that team "Legend" has some fur in the bag! Running is choppy and as I type this, the lake effect machine is turning on the snow!!! Many a hound will be humbled on a Buffalo, NY today!! Some teams have reported ZERO kills.... Its a epic battle and still anybodies game to win!!!

Good job Ricky G. If the Legend keeps raggin on me, I will help him get in the barrel, you noticed I said will help him, because I would have to lay the barrell down so he can get in it. Do they come in extra large. LOL

Couldnt have been better!
WHAT CAN I SAY BUT WOW!!!
This was a great turn out considering the running conditions across Western NY... Many a hunter and hound turned up zero kills!! But when the 6:30pm deadline came, 29 hunters had weighed in a total of 123 rabbits! Add to that another 75 or so people to the hall putting our attendance at well over 100 people! Several hunters came from various parts on the North, including a return visit from "Team Canada"!
Although "Team Legend" did not get any biggens and started off to a slow start up on the shores of Lake Ontario, with a 50 mile move to the South, 11 cottontails hit the scales on their return! You will have to ask them, but Glenn and Joel, sure do have a newfound respect for our winter conditions. Its shows guts to make this trip and drop hounds on the frozen tundra! They also won our "Path Finder" award for farthest travels, that included a "made in buffalo, goody basket including chicken wing sauce!
The team of, Ron Crane, Tim Harlock and Mark Heberlein, took the top spot with a weight of 3.37lbs. The rabbits were on the smaller size this year but its been a very tough winter on our fuzzy friends!
2nd place, was won by Brett Bavisotto, at 3.26lbs who kindly donated his winnings back to New Empire Beagle Club's Scholarship fund!!!! What a good guy!
3rd place was taken by last years winners, Bruce Stenglein, Andy Cashetta, Vinny Condello and Frank Aquino with 3.25lbs
And earning this years "Mighty Mouse" award at a whopping 1.91lb was "Team Canada". Matt Duhaime, Dan Duhame, Same Duhaime and Matt Christopher, who also sported fancy team Canada uniforms this year!
The 3rd place team, also took the "FULL GAME BAG" award with a impressive harvest of 16 cottontail!
Every Jr Hunter received a certificate and a trophy
Jr Hunter, Lisa Boyce, won the sportsman basket worth over $700 of hunting, fishing and outdoor supplies that any 12yr old rabbit hunter could ever hope for!
And the late Frank and Marilyn Privitere, were inducted as the first "LIFE MEMBERS" of the New Empire Beagle club, for their years of dedication to our great sport!
Thank you, Councilman Geoff Syzmanski, American Legion Commander Dock, UKC PP Rep, Glenn Landry, New Empire members, show vendors, all entries and function supporters!
You all have my humbled respect and gratitude!
Yours always in the great sport of beagling,
Smokes Crik Ricky G

Awesome
Wish I could have attended, but death has struck our family hard this week. We lost a second member today and buried an aunt of my wife's Thursday.
Congrats to all winners and glad to here there was a great time had by all and over a 100 attendees (WOW), that's great.
I am looking forward to trying to come North and run in May.
Once again New Empire Beagle Club has been rekindled by a great group of sportsman promoting the sport of beagling. Rick keep up your diligence!

Fred sorry to hear of your loss my thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family.
The rabbit derby was a great time. Thanks Rick for your planning and hard work.
It was a tough day, but due to some hard work by both hunters and hounds we still managed to do a little damage. Glen and Joel it was a pleasure to hunt with you guys and your fine hounds. I'm sorry that you guys had to witness Ricky G's near heart attack when I called and told him I just woke up when I was standing in his driveway. LOL Early on I'm sure you guys were doubting my abillities as a hunting guide. LMAO
Glen I really like that little bitch we gunned over. She is one hard hunting hound. Who is she out of ?
The line of the day comes from the back of one of our Canadian hunters shirts " A rabbits favorite hole is one with Hare all around it" LMAO

thank you Chad for pictures
This was such a nice event filled with laughs as well as tears remembering our beagling friend, Frank Privitere. Glenn, knows how I collect old beagling history, and brought me a Hounds and Hunting year book of 1977 to add to my collection. Last night although dead tired, i started to read through it some. There on page 170, was the results from Frontier and Pioneer beagle clubs dated April 17th & 18th 1977. The winning hound of both of those back to back trials, was a 13" female named, LISA'S MS. MOLLIE.... Her owner listed was , Frank Privitere....
This was my thank you. I will sometime this week give this 34yr old trial result to, Frank's, 40something yr old daughter, who is now a Nursing supervisor, at Roswell Cancer Inst. here in Buffalo. Her name is, Lisa, and this was a trial that she shared with her dad and THEIR dog Mollie.
A story could not be any better written, of what life sometimes hands to us.
Thanks to all my beagling friends for taking a second to read this and know that even a little thing we do today may sometime be a great memory in someones future...
