Garmin Magnetic Roof Antenna

How many have used this product and is it worth the money to have one? What were your results like?

Thumbs up

Definately worth it. Don't know just what the range is, but anytime I loose signal with the rubber ducky, I screw on the cable and it picks them right up. Just don't overtighten when you change. The fitting on the Astro can come loose.

I have had mine a couple of years now, and have used it when I needed it. I hunt in some rolling hills that have ceder bottoms. It most cases it will more than double your range of the hand held alone. In my opinion, it is the only other antenna that you need to purchase for a garmin.
I have both of the others and rarely use them.

I agree. If there is a range issue, the truck antenna takes care of it. In some totally unscientific testing, I was able to get 3-4 miles out of the truck antenna.

On the other hand, the flexible, telescopic antenna is NOT worth it. It barely gets any more range than the rubber antenna.

I like the roof antenna the best by far and probably use it the most. Last week I dumped two dogs a 1/2 mile apart and they ran in opposite directions. It was great to be able to run down one dog with the vehicle while monitoring the other dog. I was getting a good 3 miles range on the farthest dog with only intermittent lost signals, probably because he was up and down the river bank.

I've gotten 4 and 5 miles with the roof mount just driving around and testing distance. Farthest I have gotten under hunting conditions is around 3 but would surely get more if the right conditions presented themselves.

I bought mine a year ago and it was worth every penny. I have used it once and didn't need it then. I just hooked it up so I could see how it worked. I say it is worth every penny becouse it keeps me from ever haveing to worry wether or not I can find my dogs or not. So far the antenia that comes with the unit has reached far enough for me but I have my tail covered if it ever isn't enough. Just depends on what you value your dogs at.

I have used it a few times. It's well worth every penny.

In my opinion the tracking unit isn't complete until you have this antenna. It will save your dogs bacon if you have a deep hunting dog and rough terrain.

That's the only two I have, the rubber duckie it came with and the roof mount. I very rarely use the roof mount but when I need it it is very, very nice.

Ditto, I have only used mine about 3 times. Currently waiting on a new one to come because I drug mine off in the brush and apparently the rear wheel detached the base from the cable. Almost scarey going hunting without it.

The day I bought my roof mount antenna, I got just over 8 miles on a road test. In actual hunting conditions I've got 2.5 - 3 mile out of it. Very rarely need it but when I do, it's worth every penny.

Great product. have picked up dogs up to 4.5 miles away, while driving around the swamp to get them. That is saying a lot due to the terrain(huge swamp in Georgia).

.

The truck magnetic antenna is the best and most economical item Garmin sells. If you never take it out of the box it is worth having in your tool box or behind the seat just for insurance. I have built truck mount antennas that were suppose to get 7 miles and spent about a hundred bucks building them only to find out by testing, the Garmin Magentic Antenna works just as well.

You match up how you use your Garmin Astro with the Antenna your going to use.

Once the dogs are out of range of your rubber or folding antenna you have two choices. The hand held Long Range antenna or the truck antenna. The truck antenna actually gives you more range.
Hog hunters, comp hunters who follow on foot or big area mountain hunters that follow on foot need the long range antenna to carry with them. If your dogs get out of pocket and you are going to drive around to them then the truck antenna is the ticket.

I have a buddy with a deep hunting dog we just stick the magnetic truck antenna on his head so we can always find the dog!
