Water race in WNC
I would like to know if anyone in Western North Carolina would be interested in participating in water races. Sanctioned or not?
Our club has a pond that with some work could be made to regulation length.
How about other clubs that have put them on? Has it helped attendance? How much work is it for members? Did everyone have a good time or were there any problems.
Any info or comments appreciated. Just trying to increase participation at the club level.
Mtn Hunter I think you should just do it! It gives varity to those that maybe won't hunt. I modified a small resivor with a excavator put up a fence in the water on one side to help keep them in. Few mods and tweeks it seems to work good. pond is 400 and change yards. It is a fun event. their might be pics of it on norcaltreehounds.webs.com good luck.

My club is in Eastern NC, we have been doing them for years, they can be lots of fun if you have entries. We have a sanctioned event with an entry of $10, our last event had 10 dogs, after the UKC fee and trophies theres not a huge profit but it makes $. Following the sanctioned water race we usually do a non-sanctioned water race with a $3 entry, it's just for fun and often it gets a few different dogs, I think the last hunt there were 8 dogs entered in the non-sanctioned. We calcutta for those dogs so there is an auction for winner with 50% to the high bidder and 50% to the club., that helps add more $ to the water race proceeds.
Another local club in ENC has 5 regular hunts, then in the heat of summer they have 2 Sunday events for a total of 7 UKC events, just a bench show and water race. They have a pretty decent turnout after church on a hot day it's a good chance for some that do not like to hunt in the summer to have some coonhunting fun. (See July events, Vanceboro, NC club)
Here's some pics of one of our events....

The Spartanburg SC Club hold *KC events during the summer with only Sanctioned Bench Show, Field Trial and Water Races. No hunts as these do not have large turnouts in the summer heat....
They are doing them agian this summer and seem to work good and have dogs come out and swim....

thanks all for the comments and help.
Some of the folks that really like to swim dogs will buy these swim socks that go over the dogs ears to keep water out of their ears, I have only seen that once.
Suggestions:
1. Our setup has a box to hold 6 dogs and has a turn crank, it works you out to crank that boat across the pond, we had an electric motor but it went out and they are expensive, but if I were building it again I would start with a motor of some kind.
2. Buy some wide colored collars, some dogs look very similar when only the head is sticking out of the water, they make elastic colored bands for this purpose, that way judges can state red collar won or green collar won....
