feeding your dog
is it best to feed before or after a hunt or half before and half after or maybe it dosent matter. I am still new to the sport and i am just starting my 11month old redbone JACK dont want to hurt him. any comments are greatly appreciated . < TED NUGGENT FOR PRESIDENT>
I b reak mine down to 3 times a day i think they digest their food better without the whole volume pushing trough at one time.

I always feed after a hunt. That gives them the option to nibble, inhale, or go to sleep then eat.

ALWAYS FEED MINE AFTER I HUNT THEM......
I always feed mine once a day, if i'm taking them hunting I feed them once I get home.

I always feed mine after the hunt. I was told once that a dog can get a twisted stomach from eating before hunting. I dont know if this is true but I dont take the chance. I do know that I cant eat a meal and then feel like running or working super hard with a belly full of food without yacking my guts out and I gotta believe my dogs are no different.

I made my self bulk feeders and let my dogs eat when they want to eat and they eat a little more at the start but cut back after a short time. I find I feed less and no waste. biggest thing about running dogs is fresh water, if hunting hot weather in a dry area carry a bottle of water or keep some at the truck and give them plenty after the hunt. in general I feed 2x per day but always after hunting. As mentioned earlier bloat or twisted gut can occur if feeding to close to hunting time also digestion is impared when fed close to a hard workout. put yurself in their paws could you eat a full meal then go run 4 or so miles afterward and still hold it down?
I just put my black dog back on a self feeder. I had to put him in a pen by himself till his leg gets better( came out of a tree). I don't want a llot of waste and want him to eat any time he feels like it. If it wasn't for them haveing the chance to eat just before a hunt I would leave them on a self feeder. After they eat there selves sick and there is still food there they get use to it and eat less.
I might put all 3 of them on self this summer while it is hot though.

Allot of good info. There are two primary conditions your dog will be in, catabolic or anabolic. The anabolic state is the condition the dogs metabolism must be in for the vitamins/minerals/proteins/fat etc. to be converted into living tissue. The catabolic state is when the body uses the above to provide energy. When a dog depletes the "stores" their body will continue into further catabolic failure by utilizing muscle tissue to sustain its energy release. So after you hunt, the dogs body needs to replenish. If you don't provide the fuel for him, he will begin to utilize his muscle tissue to do it instead. I often think of the catabolic state as "tissue wasting". This is why I try to feed within the 30 minute window after hunting. You can determine if its the imperative if you do or don't, but its a standard of care that I try to maintain for my dogs.
