New Dog Video

I recently bought a son of my Mini female. I had not hunted him much, he has the reputation of going deep and my 40 acre coon dogs have been doing a good job.

It was moonlit last night, a light frost was falling (poor tracking), and you could hear grain dryers 2 miles away. I thought it would be a good night to find out what was wrong with the new dog. I loaded up my Old Phoebe female to check him out. My regular hunting buddy didn't want to break brush but he said he would drive me around. Heck, he is 76 years old, why not?

On the first dump, Roofus (I didn't name him) struck. Man, he drifted a track about a half mile in there real quick. Phoebe wasn't saying much but was with him. Bang, they treed. That was the first den tree on the video.

We drove to another creek and both dogs struck. They soon treed up the second den tree in the video. I liked the part with Phoebe on the wood with him, she sometimes will get back with some dogs. Way back with some of them!

I decided to send Roofus up the creek and take Phoebe back to the truck. We drove around where we could hear him well and waited. Soon, he struck, ran a short ways, located, and rolled it over. We drove around as close as we could, then I walked into him. He was treed on the other side of the creek but I found a ripple I could wade and got to him. He had the meat. Dog gone if I didn't hang that coon up in the tree.

I am not sure what I am going to do with him, my 40 acre coon dogs are more my style these days. But, I reckon there will be some nights sitting on the tailgate waiting for him to find one might be the way to go.

Roofus has a very good loud mouth on the track also. Bawls with some chop. He seems to drive a track too fast for me to get close enough to do a video of him on the track so far. But, sooner or later, I will get a video of him tracking, locating and rolling it over. I like for my videos to get it all if possible.

I am enjoying hunting him and he hasn't lost on the Bench yet for me.

Roofus is just 3. I just got him a few weeks ago, I don't know everything about him yet. I need a couple of more wins to Grand him out on the Bench. He will probably be sold to a competition hunter then, he goes too hard for this old, fat man. I like my 40 acre coon dogs these days. I probably won't have him Granded out until the end of hunting season, so I should get some sittin' on the tailgate time with him. I certainly do not need to walk hunt him.

Randy, he seems to drift tracks out really quick. Sometimes, almost too quick. I don't see any trash problems or babbling but sometimes he is really quick on bad tracks. I hope it is for real, he would be a competition hunter's dream. I like him.

I win nearly every time when I compete with his mother, Mini. She has won 11 out of 15 casts. She is always split treed with the meat.
