shavings hold moisture much worse

and hopefully your dog wont eat the chips. a man at nationals had to take his dog to vet up there for eating shavings. tore his throat up pretty good.

I've always heard to use straw instead of hay because straw is hollow and insulates better than hay.

if you can find some good grass hay it is the best, straw breaks up after a while and is hard on their hair. When is breaks the short pieces of straw are so stiff that it will rub bald spots on them.

Use wheat straw, Oats straw makes a dog itchy. Anyone that has combined oats will know what I'm saying

i use cedar shaving it helps to keep the flea's away i find the problem with hay is it's hollow and when you run your dogs in the cold / bad weather ice and water gets on the dog and when you put them in the kennel the ice melts /water/moisture and gets into those little hollows and freeze and what do you have a bed of ice just my two cents thanks Bill

cedar chips in the summer, and straw in the winter months. If its to cold for your dogs keep em in the truck, thats what I do, especially when it gets near 0

Actually shredded newspaper is an excellent bedding material for dogs. It provides good insulation and provides easy clean up. You can discard the old paper on your compost pile when all done which will assist your gardening next spring.
