will squirrel hunting hurt a coondog

if you have a good solid coondog, will it hurt to bring em squirrel hunting from time to time?

Just a question you ever told a dog he/she was lying maybe just maybe they were squirrel hunting but forgot to tell ya ??????
Sounds crazy well they'll tree possums, cats, bears, etc.........
Think about it.

you may have a few slick trees just after dark when coon hunting..but i geuss there only slick in a competition hunt unless the judge thinks a coon will fit in a squirrel hole!!lol

I had a Walker dog that would tree the piss out of a squirrel and do it silent track all day. You could take him out at night he would do the same thing to a coon but opened mouthed on track from the time he smelled the coon,,, I never figured that one out.. silent track during the day, open at night !! HMMMM

I have hunted hounds on squirrels for well over 45 years.I have a hound that is leading a Zone in the Squirrel Dog division in another registry. The key is the hound's nose. If you are hunting a cold nosed strain of hound, stick with coons. If your strain of hounds is fairly hot nosed, squirrel hunting them won't hurt much except for early night hunts, (treeing late running squirrels), some moonlit nights (gray squirrels run), and flying squirrels which run at night. Have you ever seen the hounds tree hot up a 5" slick tree? It may have been a flying squirrel, (or a mink).

I have started hundreds of hound pups on squirrels over the years. Most of them I have broke off of squirrels later on and made straight cooners out of them. Some quit squirrels naturally after getting some coon fur in their mouths.

I have had some great hounds that were good day and night dogs.

Again, if you have cold nosed hounds, you are creating problems by starting them on squirrels. I have seen some cold nosed hounds tree cold squirrels at midnight.

My 8 yr old walker coondog has done his share to train 8 younger dogs of different breeds I have. Back then on good cool fall mornings I couldn't resist squirrel hunting and he was all I had. He was fair at it too. I was entertained and killed quite a few squirrels. I now have a mountain cur that is much more interested in squirrels than he is but I use her on coons too.

Last August I knocked down a big fat doe that ran straight into a clearcut thicket. I went and got the old walker. I showed him the blood and he looked at me like I was crazy. After a couple of minutes of egging him on he took the track and found the deer. The next month my son shot one we had to trail to get. Because of alligators, I don't do real coon hunting till October. He was his same old self, never made one flinch one way or the other on deer all coon season. The reason I picked the old walker to try to find the deer with is because I knew he was settled down and would probably do just about anything I asked him to.

My point being a good smart dog can do more than one thing. It's up to you to know when you can ask a dog to do something that won't get him confused.

if i want a squirrel dog, i'll go buy one. i don't want the aggravation of a "slick squirrel " treeing idiot in a hunt.

A couple times each year when I shine a Qbeam up a tree I see a squirrel jump around. When I do, I just shoot the nest and out falls a coon.

Like an earlier post said, most hounds break themselves off squirel anyway.

If you've got a dog that wants to tree squirels at night when he could be getting after a coon, then you got a squirrel dog. If you got a dog that won't or can't tree a coon in the daytime then you ain't got much of a coondog.
