Age for the bench

Is there a minimum age that a that a dog can be shown on the bench?, I'm wondering because I have a 8 month old english female and male that i would like to start getting on the bench around other dogs, Not wanting to win but just start getting use to being around events,I don't know if using actural events as training exercise's is right or wrong but I figured If I spend my money for registering and entering these dog in the events so be it.

6mos but round here a pup won't win no BOS. good experience though 4 them. maybe get a class or breed with no competition or sometimes maybe with comp if the other dog is crap and your dog is nice but round her def not BOS. they will learn alot and its good to get them round ppl.

We have a male walker who will turn 2 in July. He won BOS at his first show, but at 6 months and 1 wk old he was at least 2 in. taller than his competition!
At 4 mo. old we started taking him to shows with us so he would get used to it. People were asking us then why we weren't showing him, he definitely did not look like a pup!

It all depends on the dog. This was just a big, well developed boy. Our female walker wouldn't have had the same results. She had to grow and develope first.

But I would definitely not say there is no chance of winning with a young dog.

All good answers and depending on the dog and the judge all true.
Six months is the minimum age and if your dog meets the breed standards better than the others it should win on that day. Not yesterday, tomorrow,or next month but right then when they are being judged, judge what you see not what you think may be, will be, or will never be. If the dog is old enough to except an entry fee on then they're old enough to be considered for the win.
Most shows are won by the practise you do at home but practising at the events is also needed by many to get them used to different places, dogs and people. If you think they're not ready you can practise with the other people that are getting ready to show. It's free and very close to the same exposure. On the other side of the same coin the entries will definitely help the club during these hard times.

May daughter ahd a now 7 month old walker famale that she has been showing since she was 6 months. She does it for the practice and exposure and is getting better at it. We try and get them to as many of the more local shows as possible for that reason. So far she hasn't had to compete against any other pups sicne a lot of people around here aren't showing dogs that young. It's getting them both the practice they need and they are well on thier way to the 100 points she'll need - She's already up to 80 - next stop a BOS with competition!

I strongly agree that the exsposure to shows will help in the long run. gets them familar with the different surroundings all dogs mature at different times though, i take them for the practice if we place then its a good thing.my daughters show the dogs for the love of it and learn you cant win them all.

i disagree with a lot of you. i have showed at 6 mths old and had pups that won and made bench champs by 8 mthe old . all you have to do is start working them at 4 mths old to do what they are supposed to do. work them on gaiting, they pay alot of attention to that now and if you get that down and the set up you will win. i had some that granded out by 10 mths old

mine was 8 mths saved him for a.o missed 1 purina show local
he could of been in the top 10 breed.have won best of show
georgia st with a 4 mth when it was big time.

I agree and disagree with some of the coments. Although gaiting seems to becoming more of a factor in the show ring its not all of it. Standing still on the bench is the least of it and/or should be anyways. Just because your dog gaits well or stands still dosen't mean you've got it won. You have to look at how well your dog meets its breed standard seeing how there are differences in each breed. Showing well on the bench just helps in allowing for the judge to eaisly evaluate your dog. When I started I thought it was how well the dog did on the bench boy was I wrong. Jeff I'd say if your young dogs correctly meet there breed standard and are developed well enough then give it a go. If nothing else it was good practie for you, your dog, and your supporting the clubs. Not sure if I'll be at Stanton but are ya coming to Chesaning on Saturday?
