What Would You Do ?
I went out for a few runs in the rain last night with my 16mth old hound. On my second drop he was gone for about five minutes, he threw out a somewhat weak locate and started treeing, I waited a couple of minutes before heading in because he did'nt sound quite right. Upon arriving at the tree, it appeared to be a relatively recent blow down/leaner. I shined it's length quickly and the tree it was leaning in, the tree had broken about five feet up its trunk, there must have been a hole there because pinched at the break was a partially frozen coon. It would seem that is what he was treeing on because he was trying to get a hold of it. My first initial reaction was to tell him no, but instead I opted to just leash him and walk away. Anybody ever run into this kind of thing before ? What did/would you do ?

You'd better believe it!
Simply leashing and walking away is rarely a wrong move.
I think it was last year that the dogs were messing around a blow down. It was a Den and there were 3 coon laying in and around it, not sure what would have happened there.

Odd question,
There was a Coon there, your hound treed there, your a Coonhunter. And you dont know what to do.
Now Im confused. Not to mention it was raining, Were it I,
I would pet my dog up, and leave with the satisfaction of knowing that I had a Coondog.

I understand why you think it's an odd question, but it's the first time in almost thirty years of coonhunting that I had a dog tree on a dead coon out in the wild. I just thought it was an interesting situation and was looking for feedback on what others would do/have done if presented with the same type of circumstance. I did'nt say I did'nt know what to do, I was just asking "what would you do ?"
Cheers

It does seem though, that you have a Coondog, it was cold and raining and your hound went out and found a Coon.
To me I would be very proud of that hound.
It is odd to find a dead coon, but with the carcass partailly frozen, that leads me to believe that the track was very old, and you have a hound that is capable of trailing in very adverse conditions.
Congratulatons sir, you have a genuine Coondog.
