I need a dog whisperer

I have a 2 year old Walker female with a seriously confusing problem. When I got her, she had been abused and beaten to the point that everytime you touched her she would hit the ground and pee all over herself out of fear. After some serious petting time in the kennel she was over being afraid of me, at least I thought so. I started hunting her only to find out that she was terrified of the lights when you turn them on, I have been going out and feeding her iin the dark with a light on and petting her up good when I do and this seems to be helping but I am getting impatient. This female has started running and treeing on her own, and showing more potential than about any young hound that I have hunted in a long long time. The problem is, I can't get to her on the tree to handle her. What do you all think? I am pretty open to suggestions on this one, she started running and treeing on her own on her 4th trip out, am I just asking for too much too quick?

you got a long road ahead of ya but if you can keep yer patiience and get her doin right youll have a awsome hound that wants to please you be patient
when goin in to the tree have yer light on when she leaves or shuts up light out when she goes back to treein turn light on and proceed in to the tree do this all the way in to the tree and keep feedin her at night like you are patience

i went thru the samething with a black dog. owner went at at night with a light and beat him with a broom stick for barking. he would stop treeing and mill the tree when he seen my light coming. i just keep loving him up at the tree and he came out of it. sounds to me like your on the right track.

Try going in with a very dim light. Talking to her on the way. Let her know it's you coming and not " him ".
Knock a few coon out to her when you get there. I think pretty soon , she'll be happy to see your light coming.

R U positive it was abuse and not just a really skittish dog? Either way others ave given good advice also Mr. Grubbs had a dog that he worked with and kept a journal on here do a search or PM him for more details. Only other thing I can tell you is if it is possible she's just that way you may wanna think twice before putting her in a breeding program.

Do you have a shock collar with a tone feature on it? If so I would work with her in the day time using the tone with a treat immediately. Pretty much tone=treat till she knows that if she hears the tone she will get a treat (hot dog pieces work great usually). Once she has that down (do it every day for a few weeks). I would go out there at night and hit the tone turn the light on and give her a treat. Eventually she will associate the tone=light=treat then you can work the tone out of it and use the light after a bit of this light=treat. Then give a treat every other time you turn the light on, then every third time, etc. This is the basic theory behind Pavlov's dogs (google search for what he did). It is a very good training tool. The only downside to this is she may leave the tree when she sees your light but should go back after she gets her treat. If you knock some coons out to her shortly after her getting her treat she will associate light=coon (aka treat). This method will also work on breaking her shyness because she will associate treats to you. I will warn you of one thing with a shy dog: DO NOT LET ANYONE ELSE HANDLE HER!!!!! A shy dog may warm up to you and you will have no problems handling her but she will run from someone else. I had a dog that I could handle with out a lick of problems but no one else could touch her.

If she was just that way, I don't believe that I would have made as much progress as I have for one thing. The other thing is that there were 2 females that I bought in that deal, the other one was just as bad when I brought her home. The biggest difference between the 2 was the looks on the other female so I started working with her on the bench every day and she came right out of it. Now, I know that the temperment of the 2 dogs is obviously different, the Lipper female ( the good looking one, lol) is a very laid back, easy going kind of dog, whereas this female is really high strung to start with.

I know a guy that had a dog similar to that and he turned out a caged coon in the day a let her tree it. Then he slipped in loved the dog up and gave it the coon. It worked for him.

Try feeding her at night. Use your light on low or use a red lens. Place your light back a ways from her feed dish and then stand between the light and her food dish. After she eats then say good girl. Take your time moving the light closer and or making it brighter.

The biggest thing is do not feel sorry for this dog. If you feel sorry for her, you will never get past her behavior. No baby talk, no you poor thing come to daddy stuff!

The other thing is I would get her past the fear of the light before I hunted her much. Each time a dog reinforces a bad behavior it just makes it all that much more difficult to switch later.

Also, I agree that her behavior may not be due to abuse. Most dogs develop behavioral problems because of their owners misaligned intentions. Dogs are not people.

Lastly, she may end up being a good coon hound that could bring you many years of pleasure, but based on her history I would say she is not breeding material no matter how good she gets.

I had one the same way, I tied a 20 ft piece of weedeater string to her collar. The stuff is just about impossible to tangle and when I got to the tree I just stepped on it and gently brought her to me. Just in case it did tangle I always hunted her with a tracking collar. After a while I could walk right up to her and leash her. It works good in the summer because the string will straighten out better.

Do not pet her up while she is acting scared. When you pet or praise a dog when they are acting scared you reinforce that behavior. In other words you are telling her it is ok to be that way. There is a thing called fight or flight. She definitley sounds like she is in the flight stage. She needs pack time. The pack will help get her out of it. I do not mean "pack hunting either". She need to be with other dogs so she can learn how to be a part of a pack again. It will take a long time and a lot of patience. I am no expert but have gotten dogs out of this same thing before. If I can help you send me a pm I will tell you what I did. Too much to say to put on the board. Good luck with her.

i have been down that road & i have found one thing. life is to short to put much time in an animal like this. 80% it will not make it, 10% it might, 9 1/2 it will, 1/2 % it will be special. maybe my patents is just not what it use to be. i might get to attatched to my dogs but there comes a time to say sweet dreams. you remember lacy, i thought if i could only get her to stay treed, i could win any hunt in the country, you got her & thought the same thing. well we know what finally happened after about having strokes, hart attacks, taking a trip to our lady of peace LOL. OH YEAH DONT FORGET, GOING HOME & KICK THE CAT. LOL

I didn't exactly "GET" Lacy did I? As I recall, after Rastus hung himself at the dog house, I quit hunting, got rid of everything, burned the doghouses and was a very happy and content non coonhunting individual. Then, out of the blue a guy named Jim Kilburn showed up at my house with this 2 dog long B &T female that he said was a COON DAWG, and he felt so bad about my loss that as a friend he was going to give her to me. After about an hour of saying NO, I finally agreed to take her. That was absolutely the deer runningest dog I have ever had the pleasure of owning, and thanks a lot for that. Now folks, don't get me wrong on this, if she had really and truly been a COON DAWG, I would most likely have never been hunting today because once you've owned one of the truly special ones everything else is just another dog. Jim, you caused me to stay with the game because I hated to admit that I couldn't break that dog and one of these days maybe Audrey willl speak to you for that, lol.
