todays dog better

or worse how many minus before he scratch out in the
70s compared to todays dog

When I started hunting their was I would say last coon up dogs then now. I remember people hunting 2 year olds saying they are still a started dog. I think years ago their was more of a track dog then today. But what came with that was deer runners. I beleave tracking comes with most dogs but if they don't tree and stay what good are they. I hate listening to a dog track all night.

I will have to disagree with your statement. I have a strain here today that I had back in the early 60's and I can lay out papers going back to a lot of the same blood. Didn't have any deer problems than don't now. They have been open on track and some will dig their nails into the wood, some will set on their butts looking up. I didn't have problems finding a coon in their tree back than, don't have a problem now.

Funny thing is back than when they treed (meaning the other breeds also) they to would also have fur up a tree. You would meet at the club and you could put your hound with mine or mine with yours and they would ride together and tree together. None of this Bull Crap of "independent" or teeth showing.

Maybe there where better "houndsmen" back than? I know that the sportsmanship sure the heck was better!

I totally disagree with Ryan and Countryfeller. I dont know about the 70's. I started coonhunt'n in 1986, competition hunting in 1988. Not long compared to many. But I can to tell you this I have been all over this country over the years and have met some of the best people you could ever meet in the coonhunting world. A typical coonhunter is not a cut throat and a liar and I take offense to that statement. Yes there are some bad ones, and there were bad ones back in the late 80's early 90's I promise you that. But the good ones have far outweighed the bad ones. There were whiners back then and there are whiners today. There were rough dogs and trashy dogs back then same as today. There all ways will be.
I agree dogs have changed. I remember in 89 and 90 there werent but a handfull of dogs in the entire state of Iowa that would consistantly tree coons by theirselves. An elite few of those were as nice as you could hope for even by todays standards. You would not even consider putting a nice one or two year old dog in a hunt for fear of screwing them up. Now your lucky to make a tree together in 2 hours and a four year old dog is an old dog.
Back then if you had an independant dog that would stay treed you would fly through the hunts. Now its a battle every weekend just to win your cast.
I agree with Old Timer that we have put a little to much tree and have taken some of the tracking and accuracy out of them. But I also think pups start earlier and mature faster than they did 20 years ago. ( Wow, 20 years .... Makes me feel old saying that.)
As far as were hounds better or worse back then. I dont really know, guess it just depends on what you like to hunt. I hunted with some great ones back then and have hunted with some great ones now, each one a little different. I can tell you this. Those great ones were hard to find back then, the same as they are hard to find now, I promise you that.

It all comes down to if you EXPECT the coon to be there, If so mabe the dogs of past. In the early 80's you could go try a few dogs and decide which one you liked better. Now you drive all over the country trying to find one that can tree the dang coon. Not sure if they culled harder back then and now days most are trying to pawn off there slick treeing idiots.
There is a reason why everyone wants to breed to the dogs that go back to Ol' Buck or barney because they treed coons!

IMO dogs have changed, but not as much as the coonhunters.

Do you agree?

Today their is more titled dogs then ever before. Their is more paid handlers and more hunts then their was 25 years ago. When I go to a big hunt today and see not one but a few hounds owned by the same man and haveing 5 to 6 dogs in the hunt and 5 to 6 handlers. 25 years ago seeing a grand nt ch PKC gold ch for sale dayly was unheard of. Their was guys selling titled dogs to men in China for big money back then for 5 to 10 thousand dollors today it seems like that is pocket change. What is a 1500 dollor dog today? A started pup or a older ntch dog.

I quit hunting with folks back in the 70's because I had a young dog stolen from me. Went to hunting by myself.
About 5 or 6 years ago , I started hunting with folks again.
Guess what? Ain't no different now than it was then.
The good ones are still few and far between.
