Old piece of carpet. I throw them away every couple days. Make sure you tack them down in the corners.

Stall Mat
I use a heavy horse/cow stall mat cut down to size. Actually 2, so I can alternate keeping them clean. With the heavy mat the female won't dig it up in to a bunch for pups to get under. If you use the carpet, tack it down like mentioned above.
The problem with loose blankets or carpet is the pups getting under them and not being able to breath. Same with shavings, if a pup can't lift it's head up out of them, they can block the airway.

Why do you need bedding?
Bedding......
I use a light layer of Pine Shavings.......just enough to cover the floor about a half inch.
It helps absorb Urine etc. and is easy to clean up & put fresh down.

I don't use any bedding till there older. Momma will keep everything clean. Shavings can get in the pups mouth and choke um.

Pups.....
Everyone has their own little ways of doing things.
I have never had one to choke on any bedding.
I have Buddy that uses alot of straw and never an issue.
I also start Worming my Pups at just under 4 weeks old and Worm them every week until 11 weeks old.

bedding
Pam and Tim. I agree with you, I'll go no bedding before I put in shavings. The reason I like the heavy rubber mat is that it gives the pups a little more traction when they're trying to get on the chow line.

This time of year I don't use any bedding. If it's cold out then may use something to keep the pups off the cold/cool wood floor of a whelping box.
