Lost his drive

Ive got a 6 yr old male that lost his drive off the leash, after he decides he has urinated on everything he will slip out of sight and get treed somewhere 800 yds away before you know it. He used to kick dirt in your face when you unsnapped him. Now he just goes when he is ready. Any suggestions ?

I owned a real good COONDOG that would do the same thing, he would urinate, mess around for a few minutes and bam, would get deep and trees. I knew his MO and was not bothered by the way he operated. Don't think anything is wrong, as long as he still hunts and gets trees. Dave

He is six so the first thing I would have checked is his prostate. Seen that cause problems before in male dogs. Could be he just needs tuned up for it some sometimes yeah just have to rotate the tires.lol

Tie him out at home for awhile before you leave to go hunting and see if that helps. Does he just do it alone or when hunted with others?

Jmo,
I'd get his Thyroid level checked {should be 2.0-3.0},and a 'tick titer' blood panel done.
Today's Dog food is full of bad 'sodium supplements' and Ticks are carrying many diseases that have a neg. effect on dogs.

Run him through a good check up, also realize that he is the equivalent of somewhere over 40 years old and might not feel like kicking dirt anymore. I know I don't.

I don't mind if he dont kick dirt anymore, but i dont want to wait
5-10 minutes for him to decide he wants to go hunting. Looking into getting him checked out. He is being hunted in Kentucky for a couple months . Dont really want to burden the guy with taking him to a vet. When i get him home he is going straight to vet .
Thanks for the advice

only takes about 30 minutes for a vet to do a check on my dogs . if its a burden to take care of a dogs health you should not own one . do you wait 2 months when you dont feel well to see a doctor .

At six years old he may be developing arthritis. It takes a while to get his joints limber. I know I'm that way.
