Training Question

I have a pup that is 7 months old. She was running and treeing by herself at 5 months old. When you take her with an older dog she goes her own way literally every single time. However, I am beginning to have a problem. I am about 95% sure that she is trailing and treeing on squirrels when she comes to them whether she is by herself or with another dog. We have a grown dog that I have been trying to hunt her with and he will just go straight through never open or check up on tracks that she starts working and then she will tree and typically its a big tree but just no coon in it and its usually not over a 100 yards or so. Its like the first track she comes to she starts working and sometimes she will finish on a tree and sometimes she doesn't. And before anyone says she just slick treeing to be competitive that's not what this is. I've had pups that would do that. She literally will work the track then tree. What would you do to correct this? Catch a squirrel and shock her on it? Do they typically quit squirrels when they get older?

Squirrels, possums, nothing, it's all treated the same. Administer correction so the dog will have no question it screwed up and then send it on.

No I've never seen one quit squirrels after they start treeing them. You can slow it down to a few every once in a while but they never fully quit treeing them. If you're certain she's working a squirrel, give just enough juice for her to uncomfortable. Or walk in and make her leave. Either one works.

FYI the reason I'm saying that I've never seen one totally broke from squirrel is when the tracks get few and far between they'll tend to go back and tree a squirrel or 2. But like I said that's just my personal experiences with squirrels.

Well Gpent just go ahead and shoot it now !! its that young and treeing !! take all these guys advice and than see what you end up doing !!dont shock a 7 mt old pup for treeing !! running fast game is another thing tho !! take it out in daytime and see what its treeing before you do anything !! if its squirrel hunt it late at nite !! not when moon is out !! Just lead it off and make it go on !! its not old enough yet to know what its suppose to and not do !!jmo ! isnt much !!

Take her out in daytime and break her off squirrels and hunt her late at night for a few nights

Take the dog out later in the night

I know of a dog that would slick tree all the time until 8 or 9 O clock. Then never slick tree the rest of the night. We determined that she was smelling old squirrel tracks. Hunt her late until she gets good on coon before doing any correction.
