Young Starting

with all the stud dog ads you hear a lot of claims, including they throw "young starting pups" which made me think, that could mean different things to different people.... some start hunting their pups at 4 mo, some wait until a year or so before they take their pups to the woods.... so what do you consider "young starting"?

You have two questions there. What is "young" and what is "starting". First you have to define just what you mean by "started".

true...

but just for arguments sake well say going out hunting, with a finished dog and putting in on decent tracks and treeing.

Some pups "start" joining in on tracks and some "start" putting in on trees. And then there are a few that "start" just treeing all by themselves. I have had all types. And I don't think that one type is any better than another. They are all just different. But I would say that less than 15 mos was "young" and less than 12 mos was "very young".

I like to start my pups alone. When they can tree an easy coon off a feeder, alone, I consider them started. With my last 4 it's been before 8 months. Pups today are amazing compared to 40 years ago.

I agree with ya. Started to me is taking a hot feeder bucket coon and treeing it. Not yet going out hunting etc., but treeing one off a bucket. Peoples opinion on "started" usually changes depending on if they are buying or selling a pup..lol

I always start them alone, 5 of the last 7 run and tree before 9 months, 2 of them did it the first time out at nite at 6 months

I think it depends on when you get the pup usually raise mine from weening age those start faster than if I were to get one at 4-6 mths old. Most at a yr. old are very well started and can be hunted any way u like. But it all boils down to who has them not so much the pups.

I like early starting pups but won’t start them with the big dogs until they can keep up In a 2 hour race...
