I got this one this year, and have been really impressed with it. I had a 43" whip before this one, and have not noticed any loss in tracking ability.

I an not a big mag mount fan myself, seems they are always getting knocked off or scratching up my truck.
I have always used the 3/4 hole drilled mounts myself. I mount it in the center of my cab and I can usually track from 8 to 15 miles or more depending on terrain. I have yet to knock one off or tear one out of the cab, it could happen but not to me and I have used them like that for 25 yrs for various applications. Some folks prefer it to be mounted on the fender with a L bracket so it isn't 4 ft above the cab.
I use a 2 way gain antenna and cut it to garmin freq. I use a hand held most of the time for communication with others. If one was worried about the length of the antenna, you could always use a quarter wave antenna and that would reduce the height of the antenna and work as good if not better than a mag mount.
Drilled base mounts have a larger ground plane and work much better.

I ordered this one at the beginning of our bear season after breaking several others and absolutely love it. It never falls off and can take a beating with the big base and spring whip.

NMO-WB150BK
Its all you need except the adapter sma-27, the pig tail is nice, as well, and you won't need sma-27 adapter.
This is the same kit, antenna, coax, and PL-259 connector one has PL-259 installed one you have to install.
I am sure they make a quarter wave in the kit as well, just wasn't able to find it on web site. It is best to call the closet store anyways they are very helpful, as they work off commission. Make sure you get an antenna that can be field tuned. There will be a cut chart on the length of the antenna rod per frequency which I cut to to mid range Garmin collar freq.
All right here is the skinny on the mounting a hole drilled antenna.
NMO just stands for the type of mount on the coax. Basically you take out the cab light in your truck. Fell around an make sure you get a hole drilled where you can fish the coax out toward the door trim. Set the antenna on the cab and center, drill a 3/4 inch hole. Be careful here as if you drill to fast the metal will get hot and could burn a hole thru the head liner or you could put to much pressure on the drill bit and drill thru the head liner.
Some trucks are double walled and this can be a pain, main thing to avoid is drilling in a lateral brace which you should be able to feel. If it is a 5/8 gain antenna you can use the rod to fish toward the hold to attach the coax by tape and pull it to the door and fish it down the inside of the door trim (hinge side) toward the dash, once under the dash, just zip tie the excess. If you elect to get the connector already installed on the coax you will have to tuck the coax down the non hinge side and then under the plastic piece that covers the carpet or vinyl and then under dash toward where you want the coax to come out.
After fishing the coax to door and taking out the slack unscrew the end that the antenna screws onto. Slip it in the hole, careful not to let this slip all the way in the hole as it will be hard to get back out. Screw nut back on, there will be 2 small hole the center piece, use a pair of needle nose pliers to insert in the holes while taking an adjustable wrench and tighten, do not over tighten as you don't want to spin the center piece as it will just twist up the coax.
This sounds really hard, but not really.
Ok side mount on fender same deal, once bracket is mounted do not over tighten, do not allow coax to spin it will break center conductor. Also make sure the hood will work with bracket, and antenna some trucks it won't but most will. Here is the thing if you elect to get coax with connector already install you will have to drill a bigger hole in the cab under dash, make sure you goop it up good as dust will come in this hole if not sealed.
Installing the connector isn't that big a deal, I wouldn't solder the ground shield, just the center pin.
Antennas 5/8 wave antenna will be 45 inches or so if mounted on top of cab, 1/4 wave, maybe 20 inches. I have found that there isn't that big of a difference between the to in mountains, flat lands the gain antenna will be better, it is better period but much longer.
If you mess up and find you have a 3/4 hole in the top of your cab, or you are unsure and might mess up, when you make your order get a hole plug for the NMO mount they are under a buck. and will not leak.
I have installed tons of these things over the yrs, and the only way I will go is installed in top of roof, better ground, more range and I have hit limbs at 60 plus miles and have yet to tear one off. They do make a heck of racket in parking garages and people clear the way
This is far superior method than the mag mount, yes both work, but its kind of like dogs, most will hunt and do a good job but if you want the best you get it, thats why I hunt blueticks and need that extra range and am driving 60 mph at times on dirt roads, got keep up with'em
If I can be of any help just reply to post and I will do my best to help if I can.
I will also post a pic of mine tomorrow to show differences.
