Getting into hunting

Alright guys,

I got a bluetick in May, he's now about 8 and a half months old, finally getting some of his basics down (stubborn as hell). I haven't done any training with him in terms of coons yet, but want to. I've asked around with some friends that run hounds and was told that I need a good tracker/ e collar. This one has come highly recommended:

Just could use some input on where to start, what am I going to need? How do I get to starting him on coons.

He is really good at running deer, and when his mind is set on something, he wont listen worth a ****, I've been told that an e collar should break him of that.

I prefer garmin but that will do fine. just dont get carried away with the ecollor if you get the sportdog watch the video!!!!! Hunt were you know there are coon it helps....alot. You can get a good light it helps too. and good boots are a must as well. have fun with your pup!

Turn some coons loose in front of him first. He has chase instinct. You break him from running deer you might stop him from running anything.

I've been thinking about an e collar regardless, he's still stubborn when it comes to counter surfing, and getting into the trash, etc. (Yes, he is my pet first)

And I want to get something decent and effective, and not spend much more than $400 if possible, even if I buy second hand. Open to all suggestions.

I have the Garmin Alpha,,best there is in my opinion,,e-collars are great,if,,used correctly,,there have been many dogs ruined because of them tho,,because of handlers not using them correctly,,or should I say,,they are over using them,,first and for most,,LEARN WHEN TO USE THEM,,AND NOT TO USE THEM,that is the most important thing to learn about the e-collar before using it,,if you learn that,,then you will do fine with training your hound on what you want him to do,
As far as tracking coon,,maybe take acouple caged coon to the woods and turn loose,that should get his interest,,but don't turn many loose.
I always hunt my pups in the timber alone,,I have never turned a coon loose to pups,,it just comes natural to them,,lucky I guess
I don't hunt my pup with other dogs untill it is doing it on its own,,and consistently ,,then I will drop it with another dog every now and then,,but mostly my dogs get hunted by theirselves

Well, you have buddies that run hounds but haven't exposed your dog to coons yet. But already developed a deer problem. If you are indeed getting into hunting you do not need to be using shocker. Have one of your buddies help you out.

You said this is your first hound I hope you and him have many good times together.Get yourself a copy of walk with wick the tree dog encyclopedia lots of very useful information in that book well worth the money. First thing I would do is train your pup to lead nothing chaps me more than being drug through green briars crab apple trees and multifloral rose by a hound that doesn't know how to lead. Spend lots and lots of time with him he will listen better and be easier to train, I have my two in the house with me. And as far as an e collar they are a very useful tool if used properly a few wrong button pushes and it could be all over for you and him then you would have a nice lap dog.

I have a sport dog houndsman e collar I can sell you for cheap. Its been sitting on my work bench haven't touched it in months. Works good. I have since purchased the alpha. The main difference is just having to deal with 2 collars. You can purchase a used astro 320 on ebay fairly cheap. Try to get one with the dc50. The ecollar will correct the counter surfing and deer issues. Just do as much reading on training as you can. Garmin has a bunch of free articles from john wick on there tritronics website. When do any kind of corrections set the dog up... if its the counters put food on the edge of the counter when he goes correct him... and repeat. If its deer, drive around find some deer in a field... cut him into the deer, correct him when he starts to smell them, and repeat.
I start my pups with a coon hide, then switch to caged coon and feeder buckets. Then start hunting them in the big woods. It takes years to make a coon dog don't expect it to happen overnight. Work on one thing at a time. Sometimes you will have to revisit an issue.

Oh yeah, buy the truck antenna for the garmin and keep it in your truck in case you ever loose your dog, it increases the range greatly.

You need to find an expeirienced hunter to hunt with its your best move! Join a local club make friends ask advice tag along. good luck.
