late starting dogs
Anybody have any experience starting older dogs on coon? I have a 2 year old Walker and 1.5 year old English that I'm trying to train. Some nights they show alot of promise, other nights I think they'll never take it up. Just want to know if any one has had any late bloomers who became good dogs? Thanks.
i never had a dog to start treeing at 2 year old but usually i gave them away if the werent treeing by then.i did have a dog that started treeing at a year and a half old.i bout gave up on her,i hunted the hide off that dog and one night i saw a coon in a tree i called her in and started patting the tree and hissing her and she went to treeing some, for what ever reason after that night she would tree coons, ended up being one of the best dogs ive ever owned.dont know why she started treeing coons after the night i patted the tree and hissed her,ive learned its more important to hunt them then to be a dog shrink.lol
If they haven't already been ruined and they are coondogs, they will be just fine.
Thanks guys.
Not the age that matters, its the amount of time in the woods.

I bought a redbone male that was two years old and at the time ran but wouldn't tree. I hunted him very hard for one year before he ever treed. Once he started he was good to go. He is ten years old now and I can honestly say if he is treed its there. He is a very slow running dog with the long bark on track. I love to hear him run. So if you got the patience and the attitude all it takes is time.
My niece had a beagle house dog. When the beagle was three years old she had to get rid of it. A local rabbit hunter took him and said he made a first class rabbit dog. If it's bred in them, it will come out with exposure.
yes its in the Blood
I had 30 mo old female ran loose on farm ran deer treed anything. Started coon hunting her tied her up in dsy time she quit deer on her own. Made a Nt ch and repo many nt ch an gr nt ch back in seventys. She was half mate to Bean Blossum Buck. If they tree hunt them if not dont waste much time on them at that age. Good luck. Mark Nethery
the younger gen of hunters expect way to much outa a 6 mon old pup there are exceptions that some will run and tree i very rarely even take a dog on a hunt till thier a yr old but thats me
