snake bite

What do you guys keep with you for your dogs in case of snake bites and does any one give them the preventive shot? Thanks in advance.

Benadryl and penicillin. The benedryl tablets I keep on me during warm weather.

How do you no your dog has been bit? I'm sure you'd no the next day but how would you no right away?

If one is bit by a rattler or cotton mouth severe swelling and sick. I heard someone say they kept a kit in there truck just wondered if anyone had one or what was being used till you could get to a vet.

Go get a bottle of dexameyhazone. Prob not spelled right but that's what the vets around here use. We live in se ky and plenty rattlers and copperheads. Iv known of 3-4 dogs in last couple years bit and the dex had em better in no time. Personally I stir clear of the mts in summer but some hunt em year round.

My male got bit 6 times 3 years ago. That year I killed 65 copperheads and 2 rattlers hunting . You hunt in Buchanan Co,VA in summer there everywhere.

i keep some prednaszone or dexamethozone and benadryle on me at all times when i'm hunting, in warm weather. As soon as i see that one has been bitten i give it two of the pred or dex and one benadryle. i repeat when i get home and again in the morning. it's still very hard on them. i watch the bite site and if it starts looking bad i'll bive antibiotic.

benadryl will help. dex is bettet if you can get youre vet too get you some.

Snakebite

First off!! I am not a VET!!!! I am a regular guy!!

I carry a kit with Benadryl, Decadron (Dexamethasone), and Penecillin. The swelling will happen fairly rapidly if they get a good dose of venom. This is How I do it! But you do what you think is right for you!!!

1st -

I give 1 to 2 mg of Benadryl per pound of body weight, either oral or injection, depending on how bad and how fast the swelling manifests.

2nd -

I give 1 mg of Decadron per 1 pound of body weight initially. Later I may give another 1 mg per pound if the swelling doesn't decrease very much. If you don't get the swelling down they can get compartment syndrome and actually loose a limb, if they get bit on the face or neck the swelling can cause respiratory compromise.

3rd -

I give them a dose of Penecillin. Penecillin usually comes in a dose of 300,000 unit per 1 cc, so I give them 1cc per 20 pounds of body weight. Snake bites can cause tissue to become necrotic, so this fights an infection down the road.

Then I monitor the dogs heart rate and respiratory rate and sounds with my stethoscope. I monitor for signs of severe shock and if needed I take my clippers and shave the hair of their leg and start and I.V. in one if their front legs, especially if they won't drink water. If you can't start an I.V. you can inject saline solution of 20 to 30 cc at a time under their skin and it will absorb through normal physiological osmosis. I also monitor the dogs rectal temp. It should be not over 102.5 degrees F. If they spike a temp you can give the Tylenol at a much lower dose than humans. I use no more than 5 mg per pound and only give it every 12 hours. It may be better to start off with half that dose at 2.5 mg per pound and keep a check on the temp. If you give them too much Tylenol you will kill their liver and ultimately kill the dog!!!
