Garmin T5 Collar Cutting Off ?

A friend was on a cast I guided this weekend. His collar just quit picking up about 30 minutes into the hunt. Long story short, his dog was found the net day on an island about 3/4 of a mile from the last place collar was tracking. Collar was still on and light blinking as it should but handheld would still not pick it up. Any ideas? Was thinking about up-grading, but not so sure now.

Andy as you know, I know of the situation ya'll had. I have a TT-5 and mine has so far worked better than all I have got, except for maybe the DC 30 that still works. I was told that the TT-5 has some white LED lights that can be turned on from the receiver unit. Wondering if the 320 can turn them on, or does it have to have an Alpha to do it? Anyone know?

Try taking the collar out and putting it back in. You mentioned an island. i'm assuming the dog swam there. Maybe the water messed things up and you lost your connection to the collar. If you put it back in it might work?

Rlenhart, it lost communication on dry land about 1/2 mile from any water. This is what I can't understand. Took it out and linked it back up and is working now, but that is not worth a quarter when it quits tracking while your dog is out. Has me real scepitical of them now. May have to go back to my Marshall unit.

Yes the 320 can turn the collar lights on when connected to the TT5. I have done so with my 320

I haven't had any problems with the collars yet but have had issues with the Alpha handheld

Yah I here what your saying. I'm not making any excuses for it but I'm using dc-40s and I think twice over the past few years I've had to put I collar back in because I just lost it. I think these things are a little bit like messing with computers. Sometimes they just get they're brains scrambled and you have to re-boot.
As I'm typing this I just remembered how I lost a collar one night. I was on a WTDA hunt and somebody's unit was interfering with mine. When it asked me if I wanted to change my unit# I said no, next question asked I don't even remember what it was but I apparently answered wrong and poof I was no longer tracking my dog. I think sometimes that's how stuff like that happens you get wires crossed and all of a sudden your no longer connected.
That's all just thoughts for all I know maybe you do have a defective collar but I do think I would definately do an update. If there is a problem they may have fixed it in the current update.

Have you done the updates online for the T-5 collar??? If not I suggest you do this first. Garmin has excellent customer service, I would call them and let one of the service reps talk you thru it. I don't know how long you have had the unit or how many tracks it has in it, but the one I have has to have the "current" track deleted every time I turn it on. If I don't do this it wont pick up the dog for like 20 minutes at the soonest.
I have noticed that the Alpha I have will constantly change screens, ask questions, always wants to calibrate the compass, changes to a different dog to track, changes to a different dog to shock...etc., etc. They have about four times the number of crap jammed into that little thing that it does not need to do. If they would take out just half of the garbage nobody ever uses the thing might actually work!!! But then they probably think they couldn't charge $800 for it. I would pay them $1500 right now to take all the junk off mine.
It's always amazed me that computer engineers believe everyone thinks and requires the same things they do...we hillbillies, we just need to find/shock our dogs.

.

Andy if there were other people out there with systems and you had a conflict in numbers an alert will be sent. It will say that a collar is interfering with yours and ask if you want to change the ID number. Way to may people change someone else's number without thinking and then just what you described happens. My question would be does he know what the ID number was before the collar quit and when he hooked it back up did it have the same ID number.

If they were different then that is what happened, just like LRenhart described.

Bruce, it was a two dog cast. One had the TT5 and the other had a DC 40 collar. After re-installing the collar, it had the same id number as before. He said that he is calling Garmin this morning to try and get an answer. Both collar and unit were updated last week. No idea what happened.

A buddy came to me Saturday night at our hunt and told me he had just purchased a brand new Alpha with the TT-10 and purchased and additional T-5 collar. He said the T-5 collar would link to the alpha but would loose signal at about 15 to 20 yards but his buddies alpha would continue tracking his T-5 collar. I told him it might need the software upgrade but wasn't sure, and I have not talked to him yet to see if his problem is resolved. Weather here is 5 above today and snowing, so he probably isn't going to the woods this week anyway, LOL.
