Talk to Cliff Ladue or Bob Hennessey. I think they are pretty knowledgeable on anaplasmosis.

You're right Dave, but they treat it with double the strength
doxycycline as they do lymes. At least they did with Hickory
(a dog we hunted for Scott VH last spring). He came down with both Lymes and Anaplasmosis and they treated the Anaplasmosis double strength for two weeks and then the Lymes dose for the remainder of the time.

Jesse, I can tell you it really can screw a dog up for a while. It took Hickory quite a while to get back to normal but the guy that owns him now got him from untitled to one win toward grnitech in just a few hunts this spring.

Cliff had a dog with it a few years ago. It wasn't caught in time but they treated it with Doxycyline he never recovered from it and died about 6 months later. I think they took too long to diagnose what he had and his heart was affected before treatment. I would say the quicker you can treat it the better the dogs chance is. Good luck with the dog.

I know with Hickory (and we had just been through Lymes and it's devastating effects with Ralph) we were thinking he had been exposed to deer ticks (he had been massively infested during a nite hunt) so we were looking for signs like the vet told us to. The vet told us that the anaplasmosis is what we caught first because it made him feel more sick, quicker. If he just had lymes, it would have taken longer to see the symptoms. He was not acting like himself and we took his temp and it was high. They diagnosed both at the same time, but the anaplasmosis was why we were able to tell quickly. I am not sure if the anaplasmosis makes them sterile, but I do know a male dog that runs a high temp for a long period of time (undiagnosed) can become sterile. Hopefully your friend caught it quickly.

What are the symptons?

Posted by SHORN on 05-19-2013 02:58 PM:

I had a dog with anaplasmosis a few years ago. My local vet gave me two weeks of doxicyclene for it, the dog relapsed. I then contacted a vet in northern Minnesota that kind of specialized in anaplasmosis he was very helpful. He said that the doxicyclene treatment needs to be full strength for 3 weeks. After the second round of doxy the dog seemed fine. I can't remember the vet's name but I did some research and the vets office was Lakeland Veterniary they are in the Brainerd,Mn area.

symptoms

The dog will run out of gas fast. They wheez like they are short of breath. Make sure the dog has food when giving doxicyclene because it is had on the stomach.
