Night Hunt Question
I have a question on a ruling: This has to do with dog/dogs returning to a scored tree.
We had a three dog cast and all three dogs struck in and then two dogs treed. Tree was scored with the coon seen. We pulled the two dogs off and led them away from tree, third dog is still trailing (dog trailing is with in 20 to 40 yards around tree scored) we led dogs away from tree and then turned dogs back in. One dog went back to scored tree. Handler went in pulled dog off and walked the dog farthur away from tree and turned loose, third dog is still trailing around area of scored tree. The dog went back to scored tree for second time. In this case the other dog that scored on tree opened and pulled dog off of scored tree and then all three dogs went on to different tree.
Question came up though how many times can a dog go back to scored tree and what would be the ruling on it? All three of us looked for ruling and I just went thru them again and can not find anything on it.
Their was no argueing we all just wanted to know how it could or should be handled.

In UKC. they can go back all night. In PKC. 2 times and are scratched on the third.

in ukc he can go back as often as you are willing to let him... when a dog parks you are required to recut if you are only feet from the tree unless you have an option to be leash locked... you dont have the option to get farther from the tree to do so
Question
Ok understand the go back all night. Patches I take it that you meant if dog barks you have to turn dogs loose and no option to lead dogs away. I am not arguing about when dog barks you have to turn loose I understand that, but what you are saying there is know option to lead dogs away from scored tree and then turn loose? Many of my hunts I have been in we have always led dogs away from tree stopped and then listen for dog still trailing. In this case dog trailing was 20 yards to 40 yards from scored tree. I know just because that we do something because we have always done it doesn't make it right. So my main question has been answered.
Now because of that answer how would you handle this situation with tree scored dog trailing close to scored tree and then having to turn dogs loose off leash at scored tree? Dogs that scored tree would never leave tree to go to dog trailing. They would keep treeing on scored tree.

Re: Question
quote:i understand what you are saying and sometimes it sucks... as long as no dog is barking you can walk a reasonable distance and start the 8 and even walk during it if you want... but if not leash locked the rule says must recast as soon as dog working opens... the word must is what makes you not have a choice when you recut

the easiest way to handle this is break your dog from going back during the week
If you don't break the dog from going back now, you will have more hunts to come just like this. It is a very easy fix.
Question
Yaa I knew what you guys would come back with, and yes sucks
and yes will work on it during week. The dog is just 18 months old and starting to get even better. So with that said will work on getting him not to go back. I know it was a bad situation and not much u can do about dog working close to scored tree. We had good hunt no winners unless you want to call me winning with 0 plus points a win
Thanks to all that answered, been big help.

quote:Wrong! UKC does not require you to recut until dogs have been led away from the tree. They are not going to require you to keep recutting standing under a tree you have just scored. Dogs would be led either the same distance they have been led all night or if its the first tree a distance the handler says he needs (within reason) so dog shouldn't go back, then handled dogswill be recut to oening dogs or the eight will be started or if no dogs are carrying strike the can just be cut.

Guys forgive my ignorance. Never comp hunted but might start. Question per above case: Say dog A was successfully removed from the tree and goes huntin’. Dog B has been pulled off but heads back to scored tree. Dog C is apparently still trailing the scored coon. Okay, dog B heads back to scored tree a second time. Meanwhile, Dog A gets struck on a new trail and dog C still trailing scored coon. When dog A strikes, he's got first strike. Next open, I strike dog C on the new trail giving him second. Ruling?
