Do you have electricity anywhere close to your tank? Or a cord? This is what I use on our livestock tanks.

I use this one for my dogs.

Bucket

I use the 4 gallon frost free horse bucket. Run the cord through
pvc pipe to prevent chewing. Put mine where 2 dogs can use it.
The bucket has worked great for 10 years. Only uses 100 watts.
Got mine at Rural King.

I make all of my dog boxes big enough to put the food and water bowls inside and I wire in a lightbulb in the ceiling of each one. My boxes are all well insulated so the vast majority of the winter the dogs body heat keeps the water from freezing but if the temperature drops below 0 degrees I usually turn the light on. It is a lot cheaper to run a couple of 75w light bulbs than it is to to run a string of 150w heated buckets or a 1500w stock tank heater. Works great for raising puppys also. I can just screw in a heatlamp bulb and warm a box up to 80-90 degrees real easy.

Team X water bucket idea

Those of you that know me know that I am always playing around with different items and ideas with my dogs.

One of my latest ideas that I am really happy with is my heated water bucket. I take a 5 gallon bucket put a strain of 25 old fashion type bigger Christmas tree bulbs in the bottom of the bucket that has a hole in it for the cord to come out of it.

Then I set another 5 gallon bucket on top of the first or bottom bucket with lights in it.

That has worked great for me. I am going to try a single bucket with just putting the bulbs in a capped off 2" piece of pvc next.

The Christmas tree bulbs should be really cheap in the next few days. I love the 5 gallon size compared to a heat water bowl and these are much cheaper.

I put my cord on a temperature outlet, so it only turns on when close to 35 degrees or so.

Happy New Year

I use LixIt autmatic waterers and insulate them real good. If the dogs drink every so often they don't freeze. If they do freeze the dog licks on it for a minutes and it thaws out. Some times when I know it is going to be a hard freeze I jam a stick in it to hold the nozzle open. Makes a puddle of ice but so what?

thermabowl has worked good for me.
http://cozywinters.com/shop/kh-2010...CFYZaMgoddm8AAA
available at fleet farm and others.
walmart has similar of a different brand. most around 17-24$
25 watts. good to 20 below zero. wire coiled over the power supply for no chewing. electronic elements sealed in for safety.
Like Bart I am a tinkerer and like to reinvent things, but considering the low cost of this and the safety issues, why bother?

If the dog is on dirt,Dig a hole just deep enuff so 3/4 of the bucket will sit in the hole, below the ground. This will help it from freezing and will keep it cooler..
