Give Me Your Thoughts On This
a dog that has opened on the ground ever since he started has become just about tight on the ground. when he barks on the ground now you better be ready to call him treed. he will open when he is running some junk and he still might open on the ground when he is on a coon but not many times. why? keep in mind he wasnt like this the first 2 yrs

I have seen a couple get real tight on the ground with age and one go totally silent. SMART DOGS..... sometimes catching a couple on the ground will teach em to shut up and get the job done. I like a tight mouth way better than one that runs his mouth faster than he runs a track.

Tight mouth
I had a well-bred English female that I sold last fall. She started as a pup open-mouthed,but by the time she was a year and a half, she was just like the dog you described. She would flat blow the top out of the tree tho.I think some dogs are just so smart they figure if they keep their mouth shut, they have a better chance of ambushing a coon.JMO.

Some dogs, at least the most intelligent ones, have learned that the more they are in sneak mode, the more likely it is to catch the game they are pursuing. A dog that barks a lot on the ground, in my opinion, is not a very smart dog. Giving your position away is never a good thing when you are doing the chasing.
I have a redbone that did the same thing. I believe he's trying to catch them on the ground. He's never passed a coon, oppousum or skunk that he hasn't killed. He opened good until about a year and a half but I've only heard him open a few tmes since then an he's about 8 now. The only time he open now is if it's a screaming hot track. I myself prefer a hound that opens good on track. Listening to the chase is why I hunt hounds.

I got one 10.5 she would bark a good bit when young. Till I killed her a good few. Then she got tight. I mean 25 tight against almost anything. If it was red hot shed squeal and get struck. I've hunted her since she was a baby. Ruined me but now she's went to blueticking around. I can't hardly stand it. Sucks seeing one get old. As bad as I hate it. I still have to carry her. She loves to go.

Hate to tell ya but it will NOT get Better. It Will get worse. Eventually when you turn loose (by himself) you will not hear a thing until he opens Treed! Bet he gets first trees a lot though. I had a dog just like that that I made Gr Nite ch and a PKC gold champ just the way she was. When she treed she was deaf to other dogs and look out if another dog came into her tree!!!
i have seen many dogs get like this with age. I don't think its a bad thing at all. We have a Grnite now that over the last few years he is getting tighter on the ground. and with that he is getting hooked faster and he went from accurate to super accurate. I would trade it for nothing. but hey i hunt curs too and they are SUPER tight on the ground.

The first two years you hunted the dog, were you hunting with other dogs? If so he might have been dog tracking some.
