Hypoglycemia...

Has anyone ever dealt with this in a hound? I have a 13 month old pup that is just cranking in the woods but after a few minutes of treeing is totally spent. A trip to the vet and the diagnosis is hypoglycemia....blood sugar level was 57 after eating a high fat "breakfast"....normal range is 70 - 120 (I think). Might be the best pup I've owned on 20+ years....REALLY hating this right now....

I had one a few years back that was super hard going. He really started acting funny and really slowed down. I took him to the vet and when the bloodwork came back she told me that his blood sugar was real low.

the vet suggested that I just feed him the same amount of feed per day but split it over 3 or 4 feedings.

I just put him on a self feeder. Problem solved.

i dont know how it affects dogs but i have it.... anything sweet produces a false high then a crash..... when you crash you are helpless almost.... peanut butter is the fastest thing to get me going again.... anything bland will make you crash for example pancakes even without syrup... cereal anything like that.... i know your talking about a dog but might give you some insight on something.... hope it helps

My vet told me to feed the dog a small amount of moist dog food a couple times night while hunting to keep the blood sugar up. He recommended the Purina Moist and Meaty and it worked pretty good.

I still do it at times now when I am hunting really hard.

Thanks for the input...there were other signs that I was seeing in him that made me think that something wasn't quite right, a little staggering, couldn't load back onto the truck, cocked head (thought it was funny at first), ect....which I now know are all signs of hypoglycemia. All of the research I've done says smaller meals more frequently, feed a couple hours before I hunt as well as give "snacks" throughout the hunt (peanut butter seems to be a good one)....ugh!

Here is my 2 cents worth.

I would recommend feeding a quality dog food that is has no corn, wheat or soy to start off with and do 3 feelings a day. I would not feed him within 4hrs of going hunting as the food will not be fully digested and when under stress (hunting or extreme excersie is stress) the dog will often pass it through stool and urination, which will increase chance for dehydration.
So I would feed in the morning, then in the afternoon an finally after your home from hunting. I like the idea of using the "power bars" that Sport Dog has. You could feed 1 during the hunt by breaking it in half and giving as a treat a couple of times throughout the hunt. You could also use their C9 products in water. Dog Forte would work the same way. Just mix you up 2-3 20oz bottles of water with Dog Forte or Sport Dog C9 before you go an let him drink them throughout the night.

Anyway good luck and don't be afraid to take care of your hound the best you can. He will perform a lot better for you and you will enjoy the hunt a lot more!

Thanks...feeding Native Level 3, no corn wheat or soy. 30% protein and 20% fat. have switched to feeding him smaller amount more frequently (luckily my wife works from home and can help). One of my main concerns is if he gets deep and gets treed and it takes me awhile to get to him...

64 degrees and dry but we managed to tree #18 & #19 tonight (season opened Sept 1st) gave him a slab of peanut butter after the first tree and he seemed good to go. Might be a pain in the a@@ to keep him going but he's worth it! Thanks to everyone for all the advice.
