Frozen Semen Issues Contd......

I’ve learned a lot this topic in the last few days thanks to the questions generated from this forum. UKC does have a policy for use of frozen semen that has been in effect since 1997. It states that, “If the semen was collected and frozen after January 1, 1997, then the sire or the semen must be DNA profiled through UKC or the litter cannot be registered. There is already a movement in house to make changes to that policy going forward that will require the dog (not the dog OR semen) to be DNA profiled before frozen semen can be used.

As many have already mentioned we didn’t even have DNA profiling when semen was first being collected and frozen. So that has created some issues for the Registry for those older dogs. It is my understanding that some of those dogs have been profiled (and no, I do not know which ones). But what we have to do now is tighten up the requirements going forward so that things like this do not remain issues in the future.

We are already expecting in the future that individual lots (straws) of frozen semen will be registered with unique UKC registration number. There will likely be a frozen semen transfer form and once a lot is used for breeding, that vial or straw will become void and no longer accepted.

I believe currently UKC had already adopted that DNA was to be Collected and Sent in at the Time of the Dogs Collection .. Or am I confussing AKCs requirements ??

Virgil, that has always been possible and always will be. Unless UKC can come up with a way for every swabbing to be witnessed by a certified witness, you will always be able to swab dog A and claim the sample came from dog B. And if the parents of either dog has never been profiled, which is often the case even today, there would be no way to prove anything. So that sample is from whatever dog you chose to say it is and nothing can prove otherwise if the dogs parents are not on file. In other words, the only profiles that can be proven are VIP profiles and many profiles are not VIP. And that cannot change until all profiles are VIP and they will never all be VIP unless the registry requires profiling as a requirement for registration.

Sorry, I thought that I was replying to this thread. Tod, are there still a very small few that don't have to DNA all of their dogs?

IS THIS TRUE ?????

1) If a breeder has his stud collected he pays "UKC" once to have the collection of straw/straws registered.

2) Then at the time of using each straw/straws for breeding there will be another charge for each breeding to pay "UKC" again.

3) Once the litter is born, there is a third fee to pay to "UKC" to register this litter.

4) The breeder will then have to pay yet another fee to "UKC" to permanent register his pup.

Maybe I need a second job.

At this point in time, breeding AI involves exactly the same paperwork and costs, in terms of UKC registration, as breeding natural. Collecting and storing requires nothing from UKC at all.

If you are asking about the future, who knows.
