Porcupines

Has anyone ever had to break a dog from bothering porcupines? How do you break one that won't let them alone?

if they get stuck to many times you wont haveta worry about it cause they wont be around. not sure how you break one from them but then again you'd think they would learn that one on there own.

is he biting them or just getting swatted in the face ?

Porcupines

I have pulled quills from many dogs, but; never anything like this. Most dogs learn quickly to stay clear. This dog is getting worse and actually mulled the last porcupine. I believe that she may have to go live where there are none.

I hunted her all fall and winter with no events and have had her grab two porcupines in the last month?????

My vet said once a quill dog always a quill dog

This is what I have done & it seem to work

1st catch a Porcupine in a cage trap
I used a small bit of salt block or dry cat food for bait
to get one quick it helps to find trees or places where they
been chewing on
place the caged porky in some brush
than a while later let a buddy cut your dog into the area
while your off to side where you can watch
if he goes in on it give him time to do the right thing & let it, but if he gets stupid slam him with your shocker til he gets the message have your handler get the dog and take for a walk & put him back in the box
while you move the porky to another spot & repeat the process
I like to give the dog a break in between
If you think he's had enough than have your handler lead him away
with you following 20 or so yards behind with the caged porky in one hand
& the shocker in the other if he shows he wants to come
back slam him til he stops even thinking about looking back
( if you like your handler make sure he's not touching the dog "or LOL ")
dispose of porky out & away from your dog hope this helps GOOD LUCK

we have a male pup that would get a porkey almost every night that we had him out. so we ended up catching one and putting it in our field and we had the shock collar on him an when he found it we let him have it!!!! we took him back to it and he wouldn't mess with it and he hasn't since! But he ended up getting quilled seven times before we broke him on them!

I've pretty much done the same thing for possums. Catch one in live trap then put it out at edge of field where I know the dog will easily find it on his own. I mark it on the Garmin then I turn the dog loose and stay a ways off so he is on his own when he finds it. You don't want to walk him right up to it because when you burn his ass up with the electric collar you want him to associate it with whatever your breaking him of possum/porcupine not you or anything. Or anybodyI else. You want him to believe that anytime he gets close enough to something with that scent that he will feel that pain from it. Keep doing it at different times till he wants nothing at all to do with it. When you mark it on GPS it lets you know when he's messing with it without being right on top of him. Going to take several different times locations etc to have him fully broke off them just change it around dogs are very location oriented.

I know of a couple real nice coon dogs that loved to kill porkys I guess after being stuck enough times an getting the toe nails fried off em they gave it up...it was a long process it seems though

hi TAG I have seen some hounds U can not break off them / they are the ones that need to be moved to no porky territories If they are decent coon hound / A Smart hound will break their self off / try shocking your hound / Do not beat your hound with quills in them you will just drive them in deeper & make harder to get out / carry some vinegar with you douse where quills were make their life miserable / If U want to catch one drive around see one in road use fishing net swoop them up take on home do some training / Good Luck
