Four 1/2 mile jaunts = 2 miles and score the trees. Glad I missed that cast unless I was 14 years old again and wearing my Keds. LOL
a coondog . . .preferably one that would sooner tree coons then chase em night. a good guide with a bunch of spots to drop and score quick. a 2 dog cast with a big eared me tooer wont hurt either. i ve had over 1100 the first hour but something usually screws things up lol.

Thick coon population.. All dogs pack up at every tree and find the coons quick..
OR one dog hunting alone in thick coons..

a coon dog...COONS...good guide...good conditions...cast just "works out" some way or another for it to happen...dogs hunt hard and fast and together or the pot lickers go home early and let the coon dogs have the nite...
truly hit it perfect...a lot of times there seems to be 2-3 GOOD drops and then the guide takes you to a GIANT block of forest and says cut em..might get one treed quick...then after that he looks at you and says cut em...every coon in the forest is now likely nestled in a den..tracks are old and bad because the dogs already treed there...usually just ends the nite...i HATE when i get the guide that does that on the FIRST drop...
ive won with 900 once and i think it was 1100 once in the fall..a lot of quick easy coon..mine was getting split and a lone a bunch..dogs were dropping out with each drop and i got to turn out alone once or twice...2nd was 900 at an RQE this past march..full moon..colder out..tough huntin..had great guides..the other 3 dogs ended up in trouble pretty much out of the truck taking minus...mine never got in trouble..was getting split with a coon...once she got split..held her treed for the 5..had the coon..got turned back out struck and treed 20yds away from the other 3 dogs..3 dogs on a slick mine had the coon...LUCK...found a coon in a den and got the cast to see it! just one of them nites...the dog looked like a million bucks...it all came together nice..last drop or 2 she hunted alone...next highest score was 600 something....
i rather have another dog get in there and get treed just so you dont gotta wait the 5...but if that other dog is close it can make for some interesting hunting...
800-1200 here in the fall isnt really tough...just gotta get all that to click on a cast...biggest is having a guide...
2 guides in the fall from the same club..1 is taking you to BIG woods...the other is taking you to small woodlots..corns, oaks and creeks..i wanna be with the 2nd guide!!

One thing I will tell you for a fact. You can't have any independent dogs in a cast and score over 1,000. Dogs are packing up all cast. I guided a cast a while back and it was a cast of coon dogs. We scored on 8 coon. 3 coon to myself, other dog had 3 to itself, and the other 2 had 1 a piece. Won the caast with 575
Another cast I was in we scored on 9 this year at the zones in PA. Cast winner had like 700 or 800. But we were walking to mine split a few times as well as another dog in the cast split.
Good guide, with full buckets, or little pieces of leased land that nobody touches all year oh ya and 1 coondog in the cast, possibly 2. You have more then 2 coon dogs in the cast and a big score is pretty much impossible.

I SCORED OVER A 1000 MANY TIMES WITH A INDEPENDANT ACCURATE DOG. WON THE OHIO STATE IN 1991 WITH 1200 PLUS NO MINUS. HIGH SCORING NITE CH AND HIGH SCORE OVERALL...
WON WITH OVER 1000 ALOT WHEN I WAS SO FAR AHEAD THE OTHERS WITHDREW GIVING ME 30 TO 45 MINUTES TO TURN HIM ALONE. HIGHEST WAS 1362 1/2 PLUS. HAD TO SPLIT A STRIKE.
I HAVE NEVER HUNTED ANY DOG OFF A FEEDER.

Recipe for a big score..... 2 dog cast, 1 coondog and 1 quick to cover dog so you dont have to run the 5s, A guide with lots of quick little spots where all the den trees have been cut down and the feeders are no more than 50.yds. into the timber, A judge that will let you bend the rules just enough to call time immediatly after every tree is scored to move to the next quick drop. Lots and Lots of cash to buy a hound that fits a scorecard and lots more cash for a quick handler that can find every coon within a minute or 2 and lots more cash for the guide with the SPECIAL spots. OH YEAH and an amazing amount of luck.
