tanning hides?

when a coon hide gets tanned does it take the scent away? cuz i want to use a hide for playing with my pups (drags and stuff) but i dont want it to rott (next year it's all frozen now) and the only way i can think of is getting it tanned but i dont know if that affects the scent at all.

Hounds for the most part run the scent from different scent glands that aren't even in the hide ... using hides to lay drags is a lousy way to train a pup to run coon scent because it's not the same scent they will run later on ...


Grawes makes scent from the glands because they are a fur farm and harvest fur .... you can tan the hide as a visual aid if you like but use the bottled scent on a scent drag made for that purpose and you kill two birds with one stone.

justin, stop putting stuff on my posts, i do not respect your thoughts... nor do i think i ever will. i asked a question and you did not answer it, just like last time.
how can a coon have a scent on a hide and scent glands be different?? not possible. and maybe i dont want to spend 14 dollars on a smell that i can just go spend 10 cents and shoot a coon and get the same scent?

If you already knew that , why are you asking ?

Of course hides lose scent .. every second the source of the scent is gone (dead) .. and no new scent is being made ... it's losing it's scent.


As for how come the hide and glands are different ... well , that's just how it is , silly .... scent glands make scent and they aint in the hide ... not much else to it .

You can try to cut out the scent glands , but the Grawe's stuff is worth the money .... they concentrate theirs and add preservatives to it so that it won't spoil if handled properly.

Hey Liz, yeah a tanned hide doesn't smell the same as a coon.

Actually a dead coon doesn't even smell like a live one.

For training pups, I've used a frozen green hide as well as a cotton drag with coon scent on it.

You can even keep a whole coon frozen in the freezer and use that...just cant keep it out long. I've done that in the past..use it 5 or 6 times and then toss it and get yourself a new one.

One thing about using drags, never leave it hanging where the pup can see it. Bring a garbage bag with you and after making the trail, bag up whatever you used to make the trail and get it out of there. Once a pup learns to tree on sight...it's a tough thing to correct...always want them doing it on scent and never on sight.

Or better yet, dont fool with it in the yard playing. Put it in the woods and let it figure it out. I dont ever play with caged coon, drags or that crap.

If you do not use chemicals it will retain some coon scent. We mostly use a stuffed coon that is over 25 years dead for our water race and treeing contests. Most dogs go just as crazy over it as they do a live coon.

What the dogs are smelling is the molicules of skin, hair, and dandruf that are falling off all of the time. Scent from scent glands is usually rubbed over the fur and contributes to the scent but is not really a large part of the scent trail except during the breeding season when the animal wants to smell stronger to attact mates.

again, I would just save the effort and use it frozen...5 or 6 drags and then toss it. After 5 or 6 drags the pup should be ready to cut loose off a feed bucket anyways.

tanning

The first thing you do is flesh the hide. A fleshing beam and fleshing knife is the easiest way but you need to get all the fat off. If you know someone with a coon stretcher you need to put the hide on it skin side out and cover the skin with salt for 3 or 4 days. It kills the bacteria. Then wash the hide. If you don't use a stretcher it will shrink. A fur buyer in your area should be able to get you tanning solution. The tanning solution I like is oil tan or a powder you mix with water and follow the directions. The hardest part for you will be getting all the fat off the coon. It won't smell like a coon when you're done but looks good on the wall. It will be stiff as a board when done. I wouldn't recommend letting a pup chew on it. You need to wear gloves handling the tan. If you want it soft you break the hide. That's alot of work.
