quills! any tricks of the trade?

I want to know the most painless method for getting these gd things out of my dog. Round two I held beef jerky in one set of pliers and pulled quills with the other till he got growling and snapping. Tied his muzzle with rope and that was a horror show. Snuck one out a day later using the first method and have one quill to go. Letting him wear it for awhile. I am intrested to hear stories on how y'all deal with this quill removal business.

One to go?

Take and tape the dog's mouth shut with duct tape if he bites. Pull the quills out with a needle nose pliers and get them out now before they get infected. Make sure there aren't any inside his nose or it'll burrow into his skull and kill him for sure.

Who cares if it hurts? You want him to eat more in the future?

roger that. no don't want him to eat more. just such a pain in the ass. I've heard of one guy who hangs em up by neck till they pass out which is kind of appealing. Dean sits on em and clonks em on the head with the pliers if they get rowdy. said they had to hog tie Race.... No easy way I guess. head lock, straight jacket... OK I'll bite the bullet do what I gotta. hope duct tape works better than rope.

look at that poor bugger on that first site. geezum crow, glad mine hasn't come outta the woods looking like that! blindfolding sounds promising, cut a sleeve off an old shirt. and give him a break between pulling sessions. good stuff. thanx.

The few that my hounds caught left them with so many quills in their mouths there was no way you could even close it much less tape it shut.I got a bottle of Pace from my vet,made for stress in horses, and give them a shot of this.It tranqalizes them enough to pull the quills out without them fighting.

if you cut the quill half off they remove a lot easier the quill is full of air by cutting it it deflates sometimes after cutting them you can easily pull them out by hand and many of them fall out on there ownlast time my dog just had them outside the moth took me about five minutes to remove them all didn't even have to restrain the hound

my hound is A ggressive. Think I'll look into that horse tranquilizer Pappy.

Get a leather glove and a couple of large assistants. Pull them out by hand and the more it hurts the less likely he will want to tackle another one. The glove is just in case he decides to bite the hand that feeds him..... the large assistants are to pin the dog down and hold it there. After you have gotten all the visible ones and have calmed the dog down make sure you run your fingers around inside his mouth and make sure you didn't miss any.

never in my experience did it deter them from tackling another one. porkies can be a trainers worst nightmare.

pappy im with you . dogs in those picture just fooling around , a serious porky dog will look just like a porcupine sitting where his head was, ive held a stick in back of there mouth to hold jaws open. a couple good asistants is best way i know... i just hold them down an pull. no secret method... pete
