Dog leaves tree

Recently a buddy of mine bought a female Treeing Walker that is approx. 15 months old. This dog runs and trees coon, but leaves the tree when he gets close to her. Every time. She stayed treed the other night with an older dog for quite a while. He doesn't know anything about her training. What to do to make her stick to the tree?

I would recommend telling her to get back on the tree when I get there. I would stand by the tree and pet her up and encourage her to tree on the tree. I would knock a few out to her after petting her up so she knows what I want. You can also try knocking one out and let other dogs have it but keep her tied back if she leaves the tree. Then the next tree get her back to the tree and pet her up good, knock it out when she stays there. It is a process. It is not uncommon for dogs of that age. My best advice is to keep the dog in the woods. There will be differing opinions on the best way to train the dog on this instance and to each his own. Use what works best for you. Good luck

There are a few things that will make me loose intrest in a dog very qickly...This is one of them.

I'm no trainer, but sounds like she may have been corrected for treeing a possum or something a little too severely.

As much as I hate the cage coon stuff, this may be a situation to use one. Get her treeing on a cage coon and encourage her. Show her that it's not the treeing that got her into trouble.

Yep caged coon thing and force break her to come so you can call her back to the tree with out haveing to tie her. I wouldn't tie her at the tree at all. I would train her to come, call her to it and pet her up real good while she is there.
Then I would see if she likes to fight one. If she does it gives her more reason to stay. Force break it to come in the day time with a shock collar. Call it and nick it very lightly till it gets to you and allows you to touch it. Then stop the nick. As it learns the only way to get the nick to stop is to mind the command the nick can get hotter when it doesn't mind. Then when you do it under a tree at night there is no confusion as to why it is getting it or how to stop it.
Once you get it to stay at the tree and it still doesn't go back to treeing. Then tie it and pet the rest of the dogs and ignore it.

try walking in wth your light off. she may have been "corrected" at the tree and now associates the light with it.

this is the kind of dog you can waste a lot of coon and time on, and may not end up with anything in the end. I would not hunt her by herself, just with good accurate tree dogs. For the first week, hopefully you hunt several nights a week, just lead her to the tree, tie her back and watch her interest. Does she like to tree, if so encourage her to tree, and when she trees hard, give a small piece of hot dog or dog treat, then tie her back, and ignore her. Repeat this on each coon for a week. If she is progressing, turn her loose with the other dogs the next week, and watch her progress. She may leave the tree and come to you looking for a treat, only give it to her at the tree, after she has treed hard. If she continues to come off the tree looking for a reward, pull a leafy weed and stick it in her face when she gets to you, don't try to scare her, just make it unpleasant away from the tree. The tree should always be a pleasant experience for her, and always tie her at the tree, preferably far enough back that she can't quite reach the tree. Dogs like this are always a tough call, what works on one probably won't work on another. It takes time and patience, but if you follow the steps and after sixty days she isn't doing considerably better; I would look for a new prospect. Tom

To me this is the worst kind of fault. It is awful to hear a dog get treed and feel like you have to bolt to get to it or it is going to be gone. It makes any kind of hunting miserable. Anytime I start a pup the one thing I need it for it to get hooked and stay hooked. I don't care how it gets there or what it runs getting there, but once it sits down, I need it to stay right or wrong.

Sometimes this seems like just wishful thinking....

This is not an uncommon problem, 15 months is still a pup. The caged coon up a tree in the day light should help fire the pup up, and then release and let pup tree coon praise pup and give it the coon. Same night hunt alone, and if pup trees a coon and stays at the tree give coon at night, this will be reward enough and force the pup to think to stay on the tree. This can be a process due trying to stay close when pup trees and not to over do it with caged coons, the pup has to keep the willingness and hunger to want to tree and stay treed. Remember its repitation that will pay off continued training on the tree and alot of time in the woods. Be patient and stay with it. Good Luck

you said you had other good dogs already treeing . try walking her in on a lead and see if she will tree with them ,and you .if she does praise her up . if that doesnt improve her go to the caged coon like there talking . also has she been shot around ?her problem is with you , and not with treeing from what it sounds like.make you and the hunting situation a pleasant experience for her,and you may get her over this . assuming this is a fear based problem . i in no way mean you have mistreated the dog ,but fear is fear to a dog they dont know any better .
