Interceptor.

It's a small tablet you give once a month. Call your vet and have them write a prescription for whoever you choose to buy it from and they will get it all worked out.

treatment should be done by a vetinarian or under a vets supervision.
a prevative that works is ivermetin, however you must have the dog tested to insure they aren't infected first as ivermectin will kill a dog that already has them by killing them all at one time and blocking blood flow thats why if they already are infected they must be killed slowly to prevent blockage

IVOMEC-purchase the cattle/swine ivermectin (intermuscular) wormer, release directly down dogs throat (not intermuscular) at a dose of 1/10cc per 10 lbs. of body wieght every 30 days for "adult dogs only".If you have purchased a dog or are not sure it has ever been treated start at a rate of 1/10cc,then at 30 days 2/10cc,then at 60 days 3/10cc,and so on until you have reached dogs body wieght. If infected this will kill worms slowy .Do not treat any dog that seems to be unhealthy. However, this is how I dose "my dogs only"."I AM NOT A VETINARIAN" and would not recomend for da.wells, or anyone else for that matter,to treat any animal without a vets supervision.

You don't need to use more than 3-4 tenths of a CC of ivomec per dog for PREVENTION. The 1/10 per 10# directions they have on the bottles is for WORMING farm animals.

Bluedogman

i believe he was speaking of low dosage for a dog that it was umkmown if they had heartworms in order not to kill them all at one time it may work but myself i wouldn't take the chance of killing my dog

I agree --I wouldn't do it either. I was trying to say that a person need not use too much of it for prevention only in one that had been tested negative. I took note of this IVOMEC-purchase the cattle/swine ivermectin (intermuscular) wormer, release directly down dogs throat (not intermuscular) at a dose of 1/10cc per 10 lbs. of body wieght every 30 days for "adult dogs only". in a reply to him.

Heartworms

Treatment : 4 shots of Caporsolate 12 hrs apart followed by a oral dose of ivomectin 30 days after last Caporsolate shots . This is only sold to licensed DVM's if I'm not mistaken .

Prevention : Interceptor , frontline, Heartgaurd, all have to be prscribed by a Vet with a neg htwrm check. Ivomectin 1% cattle is recommended at 1/10 of a cc per 10 lbs of body weight some vets will say not to use this because of this or that but as long as the dog is neg. for htwrms it's safe.

Treatment can be risky depending on the infestation of htwrms first 4 shots kill the adults or occult worms and the last treatment of ivomectin kills the juveniles that are in the blood stream. After that dog should test neg and be able to be put back on prevention. During the treatments you should try to keep the dog inactive so the heart isn't trying to pump alot of blood or it can dislodge lots of heartworms at one time and cause cardiac arrest. pulled a 18" worm out of a poodle one time during a necropsy. I think that pretty much covers it.
