Young Female Breed to a Mut ???
I just came home to a surprise!! My year old female in heat for her first time had climbed the fence and was hooked up with mutt in the front yard. Is there anything I can do to abort the preganancy??
Thanks,
Kevin Capps
Some vets will give them an abortion shot, but there are MANY complications and they are very frequent. Worst case, it can cause sterility in your female.
We had an un-wanted litter between two breeds of hound conceived shortly after World. Were advised then to just let her have the pups which was what we did in the end. Didn't seem worth risking her health to prevent the pregnancy.
Sorry about that, it stinks to be stuck with a litter you don't want. There really isn't another safe alternative though.

thanks
I have heard of the shot before but had not heard about the side effects. Thanks for the input. Has anyone ever given the shot to one of their dogs?
I used it once, didnt have any problems.
If its a dog that you dont REALLY feel the need to breed someday it would probably be worth while.
You have to get the shot pretty quick though....I think 48 hrs.
Had the same thing happen. My vet said he won't give the shot anymoe because of so many complications. He advised to let her have them. We gave them away. They were cute and HUGE! She is a 75lb walker and the largest rot I've ever seen got her. Ha! They actually looked like black and tans with white toes. BTW, our buddy recently lost his 5 yro blood hound cause his vet was doing a doggie abortion..she died a few hours afterward.

Trying to abort a pregnancy has a potential of causing more trouble than what it's worth. Just have the pups and knock them in the head.

I think I will let her have them. Sounds like the best option.
Let her have them and then put them down. The world really doesn't need more mutts and raising a litter that young will be hard on her. She is still a pup herself. Maybe if your lucky, she won't take. But usually those kind take and the big planned litter doesn't, go figure.

young female bred
a mutt got to a beagle female i talked to the vet she told me the shot had a lot of bad side affects and would be costly have to let her go so long then have a ultra sound she said would be better to let her have pups and take them as soon as they were born because the shot had so many bad side affects and costly andshe may never be able to breed again and she didnt like to go with the shot
How long had she been in season? If she just started their is a chance she didn't take. The second week is when they take most the time.

let her have the pups then let her raise just one to raise thats good for the female mentaly and it won't put a drain on her.
josh what has this to do with future breedings of this female and giving the shot does a lot of harm to the dogs future health this i know from personal dealing with a female lab that made a terrific dog but developed female problems and had to be spayed in later years she developed tumors and had to be put down
