What do you use for whelping?

I have not had very good luck with having pups. What do you guys all use for when the pups are born? Especially in winter!!

I bring mine inside to the basement.

Inside in a whelping area that is easy to put up and take down. I line the floor with a tarp or piece of plastic, then put cardboard over the top of that, then a thick layer of newspaper and finally a blanket. I NEVER let the gyp alone to whelp, too many things can go wrong. I start about 3-4 days before she is due to take her temp. 99.0 and below signals whelping within 12-24 hrs. Watch her very closely, be there with her. I have raised dogs for 22 yrs. and have lost very few pups. Maybe only 3 times did they have dead pups. If you care about your dog and the litter you are raising, then please, stay with your dog and watch the pups.

Jesse, I agree with Lori. Take her temperature. If you think enough of your female to breed her, she is worth the extra care. You don't have to hover over her, she probably wont appreciate that, but OBSERVE her whelping if possible. You shouldn't have longer than an hour and a half to two hours between pups so write the times down to help you. If she goes over two hours you want to call the vet. Alot of times the pups will come every fifteen minutes, then an hour break, then wham bam again.

What I have done in the past has been to bring my female in if possible during the last week. Into your house, or into the basement or garage (ours is heated). In the house I set up an old style playpen that the sides swing down on. Not the current pack-n-play ones. Then I duck tape the seams on the bottom and lay down thick layers of newspaper. Then I fold up an old comforter square to make a bed. The female will always rearrange things but when I take her out potty, I fix it again. (Note: When whelping begins I remove the blanket. Pups can get wrapped in it.) Keep the area quiet and low light so it's peaceful. They wont whelp in a noisy area.

In the garage, I have set up a regular kennel, with a big dog house inside it. We take the top off the dog house and hang a heat lamp over it. Test it to make sure it's not too hot. You don't want her to be able to get to the cord either. Farm and Fleet now has these flat, heated, plastic pads you can buy and those are great too. That would eliminate the need for a heat lamp. Instead of a dog house, you could easily slap together a whelping box. Google it and you will find how to build one.

It always helps to have someone home to keep an eye on her. Maybe you can get your wife or mom to check in with her when you are at work. You can learn alot from someone who breeds ANY kind of dog. There are all sorts of tricks to whelping!

I raise Boston Terriers on the side. Thank God they have C-sections. I don't mess around with free whelping anymore. It can be dangerous for them to have pups naturally.

Be ready to spend a fortune if you have to. Whelping is not for the faint of heart.

We were lucky our bitch went into labor during business hours. First pup born at noon with no fuss whatsoever. When no more pups were forthcoming I was able to go to our regular vet instead of the emergency vet. 4 more hours of IV drip and oxytocin and still no more pups... puppy number two got lodged in sideways and wasn't budging. Vet couldn't reach it. Ended up delivering 10 live and 1 dead pup via c-section at 6 PM on a Friday. Set us back about $1,000 on top of all other whelping/puppy expenses. But I still have my bitch and 9 healthy puppies.

I have found mother natures knows best, let her be on dirt,she'll dig down and pups will be warm, same thing in the summer only keep dirt moist, iv'e raised several litters and lost only 2 and that was because she laid on them. Its what Cyotes due in the wild and they dont have us to over see them, sometimes we get to over concerned. Clean is the deal, liver and eggs she'll make more milk than they need, cottage cheese and or buttermilk all she wants, high protien and replaces lost inzimes in her stomuck, just do these little things and let her her do the rest she'll be fine.

Also on dirt she needs no other bedding for pups to get under and sufficate. Plus all bedding is nasty because it soaks up stuff .

jesse, just set up a really nice bed out in the garage

then move your dog into your bed. tell stacy to come in from the garage often to check on the dog!!! this shoud work just fine, just make sure you dont sleep too deep and lay on the pups!!!
