Option To Recast????????
...HOWEVER, IF DOG(S) ARE ALREADY TREED, HANDLERS HAVE THE OPTION TO RELEASE DOG(S) SO LONG AS AT LEAST ONE DOG IS STILL OUT TRAILING.
Here's the question:
What is considered "STILL OUT TRAILING"?
Does a dog that is struck in considered trailing or just a dog out running around not struck considered trailing?
Do you need to actually hear that dog to release or can you just release because he's out and NOT declared treed???

I believe there as already been an Advisor article on this.
At this time, "trailing" simply means a dog must be "at large".
It doesn't need to be carrying strike pts or be opening. It just means in can't be on a leash, in the truck, or declared treed.
Recasting rule is easy to remember:
If you have scored a tree and our wondering about recasting:
1) Is there another dog or dogs declared treed somewheres else? If no, Start the 8 on dogs declared struck and recast once 8 is broken.
If yes, than 2) Is there another dog "trailing" i.e. "at large"? If yes, than you've got the option to recast or remain leash locked while you go score the other dog's tree.
You may not walk your dog to the other tree and then decide to recast 1/2 way there. You either recast or you don't. If you score that tree, and again have the requirements, you again have the option to recast.
Looks like I already messed this one up. I didn't let a guy recast his dog because the "at large" dog had not been struck in. I assumed still out trailing meant the at large dog had to be trailing. I guess my reading comprehension isn't what it should be.

Yep, brogy is correct. Allen explaned it in the Advisor soon after the new rules took effect and it is as brogy has stated.
Yep, that word "trailing" still makes me cringe every time I read it.
Two years from now it will be replaced with a proper term. Trust me.
brogy has spoken!!!

Allen, Just curious... are you leaning towards replacing "trailing" with "opening" or "at large".... Personally, I like it the way it is now so long as everyone understands how it is to be applied... obviously not everyone does.
Dave, I get them right occasionally.
Brogy, I don't think the word "opening" would solve the problem or intepretation any better. It needs to say "out" or a term reflective of such. Basicly, making it clear that the dog doesn't have to be "opening" on trail in order for the option to be implimented.
So if at least 1 dog on the scorecard is not treed or scratched, you can recast?

You can't leave the wording like it is because the way to properly do it now goes directly against the rule that is on the card. It plainly says the dog has to be trailing, when they meant "competing for strike" but didn't want to say that LOL.
At large would be the correct way to word it because now the rule actually says the dog has to be struck in order to turn lose, which is clearly not what UKC intended or they wouldn't have had that advisor.
