Worse training mistake-

What is the worse mistake someone can make when “training” a coonhound?

That's an easy question

The worst mistake a person can make is buying a shocking collar and using it to often. Shocking a dog when you "think" they are doing something wrong is a huge mistake. IMO

Before shocking any dog for running off game, one should be absolutely sure that is what they are doing!!!!

I can think of a few,letting a young dog get eat up bad by a coon it ruins some of them. Shooting large cal. guns when they are young makes some gun shy then they arent worth a penny alot of the time this happens when people are sighting in deer guns in the yard and dont think about it.You cant let them run wild if they are not messed with when they are young they will be shy. Trying to correct all of the pups problems at the same time will confuss him then you will get mad at him and the next thing you know he is culled and it was your fault.

IMO....

starting pups before they are ready is the worst mistake you can make. The second worst mistake I think is to whip a dog around a tree for either being green or treeing off game.

Worst I've ever made is to give into pride and take that nice young prospect hunting with other dogs just to show him off, and he ends up getting roughed up or running junk, or both.

I definitely agree, Joey. Trying to correct too many problems at once will only confuse them, and probably cause other problems.

Of course, trying to correct ignorance in a hound can be a mistake too, not to mention a waste of time...

my vote (and yes, there are several things that can go wrong!) is to put Ole Blue in the pen out back, never spend time with him, then take him out when he is ten or twelve months old expecting him to run and tree because his parents are so-and-so, and then take it out on him when he doesn't do what you had hoped.

Start working with him when he/she is a pup, and at least spend time with him, handle him, take him places, do things with him. Try for at least a few minutes every day...and you will have a pup who has learned how to learn, which will make everything else come easier.

When starting a hound, don't just take it at night and let it train itself.(I learned the hard way) They are HUNTING dogs and unless you let them know what they are supposed to hunt you will probably create trash problems (run deer, armidillos, ect.) Like Vickie said, mess w/ them in the yard first, with a fresh coon hide, caged coon ect. This has worked for me. If they know what they are supposed to hunt they may never start running trash and you won't have to worry about breaking them off of it!

Bad mistake is......

Trying to break them off trash before you knock any coons out to them.Make sure they know what you want them to be after before you try to break them off everything else.

I agree with Vickie. I've got a Stylish Rebel pup that I got when she was 6 weeks old, she goes about everywhere I go. By keeping her with me most of the time I can take advantage of all the little training situations that present themselves. An added bonus is that she is used to being loaded, hauled, and being around lots of people. My 6 month old pup acts like she is a 3 year old, she is level headed and all business when it comes training time, she has the opportunity to be a puppy the rest of the time.

I'm looking forward to Volume II of your book Vickie. Volume I is the best training aide that I have ever read.

Lack of Dicipline

That is self dicipline and not related to the hound dicipline.Self control is a must in my opinion.The worst mistake I can make is losing my temper,not only with my hounds but in everyday life as well.I agree with a lot of the answers here except I usually break(or at least partially break) my hounds while they are in those early times of experience,while they are just learning what nature and being out in the woods is all about.If the word NO is taught while they are puppies then that word in a scolding tone goes a long way in controling the trash problems while they are still babies but big enough to go on walks in the woods in the late afternoons.A light spanking may be needed at these times but never hard dicipline.Usually by the time they are old enough and ready to start coonhunting they already have an idea of what they are NOT supposed to mess with.There are some great answers to this topic and for a beginner just learning a lot of headaches and mistakes can be avoided if the answers are applied without losing tempers.
