Doesn't look like he got into them that bad
. We've got more "porkies" or "hogs" around here than we do anything else. Some dogs learn quick, some never get it. When breaking your dog off of them, don't hold back. Make it the most miserable experience they've ever had in their life! Kill everyone one of those prickly bastards you see. jmo, wd
What would I do????? Start pullin'!!!!! Must have been in the middle to upper part of the state. We start running into them about an hour north or east from where I live. Those southern and midwest boys complain about dillers.....I would trade a box of these for a truck load of dillers...Problem is when you think you got the last quill out another beals it's way out. Those are just the ones showing. There's a bunch under the skin too that you can't see.

Over here in Nova Scotia it seems like there's 2 porky's for every coon. There a hunt ruiner
Diller or armor plated possum is an armadillo. They have more of them out in the midwest and south than coon. That's "middle" to me. I sit on the Ohio line and there is kinda of a circle around where I live that we don't get into them. The Laurelville Club has them in there area. I got into one about 4 years ago in the Tionesta area of Forest County.

lots here in upper pa. we breed um extra big too and i would never kill one most hounds with a half a brain will only bother once or twice
Randy Tallon said it best, start pullin!! I think I would take that hound to a vet and have him put under and get the quills pulled, if you do it yourself you are gonna fight with that dog the whole time and more than likekly not get all the quills out. Next, load up a shotgun and KILL every porky you can possibly find! I maybe wrong but I don't think you can legally kill porkies in Pa., but then again.......! Northern Pennsylvania and southern New york have a lot of Porkies and we hate them!!! You will find them around pine plantations and old hollow beech trees most of the time but where you have a lot of them you can find them most anywhere. A friend of mine used to cruise the back roads lickin on a 12 pack and shootin porkies, he killed 11 of them in about an hour a couple years ago. Save yourself some frustration and KILL every porky you see, they cant run very fast either so chase em down and put it to em!

quill pigs
pull the quills an make every one hurt,if it dont give the dog a wack to make it hurt, after a few quill pulling trips they'll break them selves...an a little controlled training with pig an T.T. an or the old hickory method doesn't hurt either..
grain fields an apple orchards are bad here..

Porkies
Had a redbone female Mandy she only grabbed about 4 of them til she left them alone. Quills would fester through & come out 6 months later.Had a nice young male Sire Blakesleys Nrthrn Buck dam Adams Red Betty, He never quit grabbing them. We lived in Potter Co Pa at the time.So
I sold him to James Dorman in Tex. My female ChNTCh PaST
Ch never grabbed one Thank God for that. We spent many nites pulling Quills.

I belong to a hunting camp out in Clearfield Co. and the first 6 years i hunted up there i never saw a porky in the dark With my ol OKIE dog(Redbone) and Tanner (walker)...The first year i took Banshee up she treed a few at 9 months old but did not catch one till the following year. I pulled quils for 2 days ... Two years ago i took her up again and it took me 20 mins to get another,Also my buddy's dog got a few so i started pulling and it took another day (Nothing like the dog above) But my buddy had to take his dog to the vet (She got pretty ignorant about it). We called the Vet in the morning and see if they could get us in and they called back about 10:30and had a cancelation so we hurried up and got her in. They put her under and only took about 1 hour so we picked her up in a few hours. They only charged about $90 ( He thought about $250) so he was happy and we were on our way. The tech said her ol collie dog gets one a month and she pulls a few every so often. She said its no biggie if they will let you pull them. Also they show up after a few weeks some will fester through. Kinda like fiber glass... Good luck

Hunted at Pittsfield Pa in Warren county at the BBOA National and numerous dogs and handlers found out what porkys were all about. I know after the hunt on Friday night they pulled quills out of about two dozen dogs, had several vets on call. Most of the local guys new exactly what to do. I had two guys pull about 15 out of my dog in the woods.

Once they get broke it's like all the other stuff, you seldom see one with your dog but in the mean time never go in the woods with out a pair of pliers. Second thought take the pliers any way if you're in porky country.
we
don't have em here but up nort and east of me they sure do... I'm not far from Randy Tallon.. I have a camp in North Central Pa. the coonhunters up there sure hate em. Don't get caught killing the useless things the Pa.Game Commission protects em. I see em I harrass em good !! lol..

We have a ton of them here, I try to stay away from the Hemlocks, you'll find alot there. I carry a heavy set of forceps, you can lock them on and really pull. I don't even know how many times I thought I broke my dog off them, they really smell, and I guess the dogs can't resist, and they don't feel any pain til you start to pull them out, so they're slow to associate the pain with the porky. If you can get one in a cage, you could get some serious training done with a shocker or fence charger!

Just in the last couple years I've caught 2 or 3 for a little temporary training. There're slow and not real bright about trying to run away. You can actually herd them around a bit with a stick like you see them doing with pigs. I at the moment used a dog leash with the chain end as a choker to catch them, worked just barely good enough to catch them. They don't zip around like a coon but you would'nt believe how small a hole they can squeeze out thru. I had a good sized adult in one side of a dog box and I watched him go thru between the bars in a side vent. They will slap you with thier tail , I think thats where the idea that they throw quills came from. Dad always said the way to catch one was to reach right thru under his nose and grab his belly where they 's no quills, said they would't bite. Time I get that personal with'em I KNOW they won't bite.
worst animal there is for a dog to be messing with pull quills from the angle there entered or they break off gonna take two peoplerun a gag in mouth like a horses bit with reigns keeps dog from biting .towel and you can get the ones inside the mouth . cant be hard enough on a dog doing this in my opinion cause they can get blinded or die from this even months later some dogs even form a grudge and will go after one every time they smell one . putting them out for the procedure doesnt teach them anything .
Don't take them to the vet where they will get babied. Get two guys, strap the dog down and make them remember every single quill coming out. Don't make it pleasant
forest companys had a bounty on them here years ago..
