People up north with confederate flags...

I live in the deep south. Always have. My family were all rural farmers and have lived here their whole lives. I always thought flying that flag was foolish and in poor taste.

I've noticed a lot of people, especially in Ohio, Indiana, etc that drape this flag and have it on their trucks/shirts, etc. Why is that? There is a post on the main board of someone from UKC from NY with the flag on their truck. I guess I've never seen the point

I'm sure we all have ancestors that fought for both sides....in every war. So your answer is you fly it out of respect for the confederate soldiers who fought? Thanks for your contribution

The flag is part of American History. The flag dose not mean hate. A alot of groups have used it for that, and that is not the meaning of the flag. The men who fought and died for this flag did not do it for hate. They believed in something.

I do not agree with how this flag is used or viewed today.!!! It should not be used by these groups of hate the skin heads etc. It is American History that Americans fought and died for. Yes they were Americans. We should not forget the past.!!!! Hell there are people who do not want this flag to fly over confederate graves, that is wrong.

I feel alot of people fly this flag for the wrong reasons. Stickers and flags on trucks, shirts etc, is just what some like and think is cool.

Let me ask you this, if the out come of the civil war would have been different and the American flag as we know it today been defeated. How would people use and think of it. Now I know they would still have been a smaller country, but would people view it as hate or different.!!!!

I enjoy reading and learning about the civil war. I do enjoy seeing the confederate flag. But only when it is used correctly and not for hate.

JMO. sory for rambling.

By the way I had ancestors on both sides and respect them all.

I own one, I dont use it or fly with the intenion of hate nor do i agree with people that do use it for hate. I like it for its history, American history. I also have a dont tread on me flag that i have hung in my garage. People can take something and turn it into evil/hate. Like the swastica or however you spell it. Hitler made that into evil. i dont know, i like US history, Plus even the Dukes had it on their car LOL I respect the flag for what it is, not what people today made it out to be, If that makes any sense LOL

Trying to sell the symbol of something as O.K. when that something was about as wrong as it could be just does not work. Telling others that we are flying the stars and bars "out of respect for dead veterans" that "fought for something they believed in" or that "it's our culture and heritage" all the while conveniently leaving out the part about one race owning another {stars and bars} or one race exterminating another {swastika} wont do.
I also enjoy learning about history, but I cannot leave out the biggest, most important point of either conflict, what some group of people did to their fellow man. Wrong as it definitely is and then respect the people that caused it????
What was once symbols of a dark cause, the continuation of slavery...the completion of genocide, had no honor to begin with and should only be the used now as the symbol of something never to be forgotten, so it does not happen again.

YOU MAKE SOME GOOD POINTS AND I RESPECT THAT. BUT I BELIEVE IN MINE ALSO. A POINT THAT MOST DO NOT THINK OF IS THAT MOST WHO FOUGHT FOR THE CONFEDERACY DID NOT OWN ANOTHER RACE.!!! THEY FOUGHT FOR STATES RIGHTS. NOW THAT RIGHT DID HAVE TO DO WITH SLAVERY AND I TO AGREE THAT WAS AWFUL WRONG. MOST OF THE MEN IN THE SOUTH WHO OWNED SLAVES HAD ENOUGH MONEY TO BUY THERE WAY OUT OF THE ARMY AND IT WAS DONE. THERE IS NOT ONE THING WRONG WITH THE STARS AND BARS FLYING.

That you can fly whatever flag you want to is just one more reason this country is the greatest one on earth. I will also be the first to say that there were many confederate veterans that were gallant and honorable in the way they fought on the battlefield. The hardships they had to endure are incomprehensible to us today. I would also say that the vast majority, truth known, enlisted not because of some cause they believed in but because it was the thing to do, the test of a man, their neighbors son was already gone, etc.
It was their cause that was not honorable and that is what should prevent anyone from calling them "heroes" just the same as we don't call Nazi's that won the "Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords" a hero.
It's easy for a white guy to say there is nothing wrong with flying the stars and bars...try looking at it through someone else's eyes...try looking at a swastika as a Jewish person...they don't see it the same.
As to the OP's original question...Ohio and Indiana are big coal states...our current president vowed that "anyone trying to operate a coal dependent business in this country would find it impossible"....that flag, whether you believe in it or despise it incites bad feelings in a lot of people.

Posted by Terry Dye on 04-11-2015 06:25 PM:

The majority of southerners that fought in the civil war were self reliant men who fought for the rights of the individual states to reject intrusion from the federal goverment into states rights. Much as is today, the federal gov. was percieved to meddle into every aspect of Southern life. There was only a small percentage of the population in the South that were slave owners. I seriously doubt that the masses were willing to fight and die for the ones that did own slaves. Non of my ancestors owned slaves and many died fighting for what they believed was a worthy cause and I for one am proud to honor those that sacrificed for the right reason by flying the Confederate flag in their memory. Not as a symbol of hate!

Anyone that believes the war was fought over slavery stopped paying attention in about the third grade.
It does show though that there were race baiters back then too. How old is Al sharpton?

Amen to that Slavery wasn't right and still an't but the war was started over States rights most here in the South didn't not like the Jack booted federal thugs telling them how to live and still don't I had some great great Grand parents who fought and didn't own slaves they were poor mountain farmers 3 of them fought in the 51 st VA Infantry but even after Lee surrendered they fought own for anthor month

^^^^^^^^^

And they should actually read the Emancipation Proclamation! History books are written by the victors.

People that have any sense know why someone flies it. One flies in my front yard 365 days a year. I have a black friend that drives right under it regularly bringing me cleaned fish and fresh vegetables. Then he drives right back under it with the coons and eggs that we give him. Doesn't bother him one bit because he knows I'm not a KKK member or a skinhead.

While I'm on the subject. Our SCV Camp put flags on graves today. This member is 93 years old and came to help us. His Grandfather was a Confederate veteran.

By 1840 cotton was worth more than all other exports combined. By 1860, the economic value of slaves in the United States exceeded the invested value of all of the nations railroad's, factories, and banks combined. At least 2 of my great great grandpa's fought for the south. I have the records. Pictures. I understand where yall are coming from but we need to face facts.

Posted by GA DAWG on 04-15-2015 04:35 PM:

So what?? The civil war was not started over slaves. Sheep you ain't never read up on the history? Matter of fact the slavery issue didnt come up till late in the war. Plus I see your posts other places. Your getting sucked in by the race baiters buddy. Everything they post is white on black crime.

Slavery didn't start in the south and it didn't end in the south. I think alot of people forget that the Africans traded there own people. No one went over and captured and took them by force. Also there were free African Americans that owned slaves themselves. Sorry this is off the original subject of the Confederate flag. And I do believe confederate veterans could be viewed as heroes the same as the union and anyother veteran who has fought in any war.
