There is only one week left now! I hope that everyone has theirs in the woods every night. Where is Doug and Woody going? Darrin, how are your coons moving? Jared told me that he turned Boone loose at 6 PM Mon afternoon and he went 600 yds and treed a coon. If you are going to Greencastle, you had better be ready for some cold tracks and long walks. Usually they have pop up coons and it takes a tree dog and a big score to win. This year the coons don't seem to be cooperating and are out feeding in the afternoons for some reason. It is going to take a real coon dog to win at Greencastle this year.

That's how they operate here when it gets hot and humid. I'll predict it will cool off before the zones and things will be back to more like normal. 2 nights ago we treed 4 and saw 9 total setting up around where we treed in 2 hours.

There are only 4 more nights. Is Ol' Red ready to go? Is this finally going to be "the year"? Who is going to win that $5,000?

I don't guess that anyone worked late yesterday or came in today to give us that list of Redbones and which zone that they were going to.

The competition is sure going to be fierce in North Carolina. I believe that I would have picked a different Zone. Train, Gabby and Woody against Awesome, Atwell, Hardtime Dixie, 100 Proof, History, Bearmeat Drifter, Cutter's Cain, Charlie Brown, Money Bawls and Hey Jude, just to name a few. And they are only going to send 14 to the Finals. Oh my goodness, we are down to the day after tomorrow!

Isn't that only 5%? At least we will have that numbers excuse if no one wins.

Well, we know who all is going and where. I have heard many times that this a team sport. It takes a good dog and a good handler who can work together as a team. The handler has to know the rules and know his dog. And they must both be in shape and ready to compete. You don't just show up with a good dog and they give it to you. The best dog doesn't always, if ever, win. The best team usually wins. But when you have 20 or 30 very good teams, then luck/breaks play an important part. Now, with that said, just who is going to win?

Posted by OLD TIMER on 09-10-2014 04:43 PM:

Richard ??

For the "HUNT" starting with zones--

Do they "draw" the 4 hounds for the card, than do they "draw" the guide for those 4 and last do they "draw" the Judge for that card???

At some of the hunts I have gone to, it seems that sometimes the guides and handlers know each other just a "little" bit better than normal???

Now your local hunts where you are going for points for a Title, maybe isn't as bad but Breed Days or World Championships where there's just a little more on the line maybe drawing all 3 would make the playing field alittle more even??

Never liked playing a ballgame where the umpire's kid was the other pitcher!

Oh my goodness, it sounds like someone is just a little paranoid. I thought that you did not like comp hunts and comp dogs so I don't understand how you know "what is going on".
Allen Gingrich could give you a much more knowledgeable answer but I will try. Yes, they randomly draw out all of the casts at any hunt that you will attend whether it is a local or large hunt. They also try to have hunting guides so each guide will have his own dog. In my experience, you are a lot better off with a hunting guide. At a hunt like the World Championship, a lot of the handlers know each other because they have been doing this a long time and have drawn out together before. But at the local hunts around here everyone knows each other also. You will usually get 2 or 3 friends in the same cast. Now if you don't go to many hunts and don't know anyone then it may appear that you are the only stranger in the cast.

Please explain what you mean. The dogs in a cast are all cut together. Not sure how the guide could be a factor

Well, this is true ABOUT THE DOGS--

And Richard is right about " hunting" Guides. I'm was just thinking about the Non-hunting guides where the "Old Dog" gets a guide that his handler "dropped" a few Bucks on Tuesday or Wednesday night before a certain hunt and it just "happens" that a couple
other guides just can't find a spot with any coon in them for a few of the other cast.

Or is this just some of the "LUCK" in Comp Hunting.

Don't always have to be "in the kitchen" to know what's cooking.

Oldtimer, you have a very skewed way of looking at competition hunters.
It shows in almost every post you make. I'm not sure if you had a bad experience in a competition hunt when you were younger....or you have listened to the wrong people talk about competition hunts.
Most of the dogs that show up at the zones will be good dogs and some will be truly great ones. There will be many great handlers there as well.....but the dogs that get through to the finals will be the ones who have a good dog, a good handler, a good guide....and most importantly...a lot of luck.
Anyone who competition hunts a lot knows what I am talking about. You can have the best dog there and never make it through the zones without a good guide and some luck. It is like that at any hunt that requires plus points to advance and any hunt that only lets a certain number of dogs advance.
You have to be lucky that you score Plus points and then you have to be lucky enough to score enough of them to advance to the finals. In the ukc world hunt....you dont always advance just because you win your cast....where as in other world hunts...you do.
If you dont get a good guide and only make one tree and its a den that gets circled....well, you just didn't have luck on your side. I made it to the top twenty in the early 90s down in Tennessee one time and on the round you hunt by yourself my dog treed twice, both dens and got circled. Dog did everything right....but I needed some luck to get one treed on the outside. No luck equaled no advance and my world hunt was over. In other world hunts...the best dog who wins the cast doesn't have to have plus points to advance...so it takes away some of the need to be lucky. Some like that, some dont....but for those who play the game...we accept it and play by the rules....whatever they may be.
