I agree the babbling rule needs enforced most judges want to go with whats best for them if they run a tight then a tight dog is fine inless someone else brings it up and there's still not much done about it same way with a babbler

The babbling dogs gets all the strike points with 2nd or 3rdyou tree around here. I like a tight mouth dog. They're more accurate in my opinion

I had one that was stone cold silent on the ground, was deep and alone everydrop and had the grease when you got their... Finished him out to GrandNite Champion and had nothing but complaints in every hunt I put him in because he would'nt open on the ground....I guess everybody was mad because their junk dogs could'nt ride his tail to the tree... I like one that's silent, it will show you who's packing a real coondog in a hunt..
quote:Agreed!!! I had one too! She went from PR to Grand in 8 hunts and never lost a cast with her. Did not hurt that she was mean as the devil either. Dogs that did come into her tree left in a hurry!!!

I love a tight mouthed dog and can't stand a ghost trailer(babbler) but there is a huge diff in a dog that is tight and one that is silent and way you cut it babbler or silent one is just as bad as the other

ull never
catch many coon on the ground with a dog blows the woods up as soon as the feet hit the timber now take a dog u can cut way back and blows in head up and the coon jump up to the first branch and dont even no wat happen if they think before they jump its over

quote:i dont consider it opening on track because everytime ive seen my female do it when i would turn a caged coon out to her in a field and just watch her she would open up two times on ground check the tree in the field or on the edge then circle the tree really quick then get back on the wood and throw three fast chops then go into a steady chop when i i her her throw those three fast chops i know she will be there until the sun comes up.

I like a dog that opens on track and will tighten up to get away from the rest if being dogged, but want a honest strike dog, but like someone said the stone cold silent hounds have never ever seen one scratched for it and Babbling should be dealt with but then you get some that want to minus every thing when it opens under the minute if it doesn't bark all the way, you get a dog that drifts out on a track and opens deeper they want to minus?? dog carries track out but rule doesn't give yardage LOL just a mess, I think do away with the minute all together and all strike for same amount if this is such a problem, would sure take care of the babblin rule. But believe dogs should be acoutable for strike also so make strike 100 for all then when Ole lazy barks 3 times and is babbling and comes out because he cant keep up or what or trees a possum etc. 100-. And add a count down on tree to help with the me tooers. Then we can work on the silent hounds jmo. but don't see alot of silent hounds here much, but when I notice it I ask if dog is silent on track to see what they say, pretty tough call, mine is a open dog but have seen him locate and tree layups also, so be hard to inforce sometimes. Just rattling on

I'm a fan of tight mouthed dogs but get tired of folks wanting to scratch them for not opening. .
.
Anyone who complains about gettin beat by a silent or tight dog is usually leadin a $hit eater. My dog is almost always last strike but they better be quick to steal a first tree from him, any worthless babbler that covers quick should be able to beat him.
Babbler 100+75=175
Coondog 25+125=150
But i do love sayin....strike him tree him.

I USED TO HUNT A LITTLE WALKER FEMALE CALLED MT. ST. SNEAKER. I GOT HER FROM JIM KINNARD UP IN OHIO. SHE CAME OUT OF GEORGIA, I BELEIVE. SHE'D GET FIRST AND FIRST ON THE FIRST TWO OR THREE TRACKS, THEN SHE'D START SHUTTIN' UP THE REST OF THE NIGHT. SHE WAS HARD TO GUARD, QUICK AS A CAT. DID ALOT OF WINNING WITH HER, WHEN SHE STARTED TAKING OVER THE CAST, THEY'D START YELLING SHE WAS SILENT. I SAID, LOOK AT THE CARD, FIRST AND FIRST ON FIRST THREE TRACKS, THEY SHUT UP AND I CONTINUED TO WIN!!! I SOLD HER IN OKLAHOMA.
Big difference between silent and tight mouthed dogs. Silent dogs simply locate and tree. Tight mouthed dogs give a little on the ground. I have seen babblers get penciled but have yet to see a silent dog get scratched. If a dog is
truely fast on the ground and can run a track he/she can out run the track straddlers. I got hazed by a lot of people for putting a seven year old in the hunts because of his age. He could run a hot track to catch while giving just enough mouth. A cold track he would drift and hit here and there and fall treed. After I granded him in short fashion the hazing stopped. Why? They knew what a real track dog was and that he had beaten silent dogs and babblers along the way. Some several times. My point is silent and babbling dogs are against the rules but neither are handled according to the rules like they should be. The rules are there to try and keep "undesired" traits out of the breeds since hounds are supposed to be open trailers of game. I like a dog to give mouth according to track. Not to much or to little but enough to let me know how hot or cold the track it. JMO

So long as it has a coon I do not care they can bark every breath on track or just fall treed but I hate a babbling dog of the leash, had one last week that left babbling went 30 yards took a crap and kept barking until it was done and never stoped the whole hunt, never got treed either and we treed 4 coons.

Yeah kinda hard to believe that dogs get points for barkin at pretty much anything from off game, other dogs,or just ghosts. Then you put the 8 on them and a dog thats actually huntin in there several houndred yards deeper strikes and brakes the 8 for the babblen mutt.Kinda mest up system but not sure how to fix it.I hate auto striken dogs and have no respect for there handlers.
Babbling and silent dogs are both culls in my book.

How would a silent dog compare to a babbler!! The babblers stealing points!! Silent dog is getting last strike? If they have a coon whats the problem!!!!

I'm hunting a plott dog that's pretty tight on the ground at times but will trail a little an its hard to win casts when you pull third of fourth strike so I really don't know why every one cries about it especially the babbling me to dogs
