Subcutaneous Emphysema

My dog got a small deep puncture in his back leg right where it meets the abdomen. I’ve had him on antibiotics for 5 days now and he’s doing pretty good except he’s got air all under his skin all along his back and base of his tail. You can tell he’s hurting as he’s really jumpy if you touch him. From what I’ve read it’s called subcutaneous emphysema and not much you can do for it. Any recommendations appreciated.

For many unforeseen reasons I would recommend a vet visit. That kinda wound can turn into something serious.

Sounds like the stick punctured his lung. Not much that you can do except keep him quiet and on antibiotics until it heals. The air will eventually be absorbed.

Follow up

Shad and Wes: I took him to the vet 30 minutes after the initial wound happened and got a prescription for the antibiotics. 👍🏼

The puncture hole, about the size of a pea, was in on his inner left thigh. The vet advised leaving the wound open to allow it to drain. Every time he walked on it air was sucked into the hole and caused a condition called subcutaneous emphysema.

Shad and Wes: Went back to the vet after 5 days when the air was noticeable and he decided to close up the wound as there was no infection. He said the air under the skin would be absorbed and dissipate over time. 👌

Shad and Wes: Total vet bill including stitches was $82. 💯

WOW! $82! Heck here in the area where I live it’s darn near $82 just to get through the door of the vets office. I can buy a 10 dose package of brand name DHLPP vaccine and vaccinate my 6 dogs for less than what it costs me to have (1) of the six dogs vaccinated by a Vet.!!

Costs as much to take a dog to the vet as it does for a human to go to their regular GP Dr. They bill you $70 for an office visit, $20, for the vaccine and another $20 bucks for annual physical.

If any surgery is involved your going to be $300 to $500 at a minimum.

I only go to the vet’s office if I absolutely have to.

The vet asked if my dog was tough and I asked him is the Pope Catholic? He let me hold him down on the table while he put in two perfect stitches. This good old dog is about 9 and has been cut up so much over the years. He knows when you’re trying to help him and is cooperative.

Puncture wounds are tricky. They can leave behind debris which can be a source for infection. They can perforate or puncture organs. With the sub q emphysema, my first thought was a punctured bowel…second would be lung. Air typically doesn’t come in from the outside…think pressure gradients…through a wound, but I don’t suppose it’s impossible. Hope your dog makes a full recovery.
