coon movement northern IN
Man alive the last three days the coons have been moving incredibly every night.. Hunting ground where folks told me all of January the coon were all killed out or died out.. LOL
I've not hunted in Indiana since Feb1 until three nights ago due to cold weather and work schedule on the good nights..
Started back hunting as the weather was breaking and no travel scheduled for two weeks.
First night - two for the old dog, den and a hole for the pup..
Second night two for the old dog, two for the pup, each had a hole and a den apiece.
third night, old dog treed four in an hour, pup treed two, holed one and i caught him off the road on one in about two hours..
I saw 8 coons laying up in the three nights I didn't tree. Ran into Dean Miller last night and he said he'd treed four already and seen 7 lying up walking thru a heavily hunted section..
Said Steve was in the next block and it sounded like he'd treed twice.
We were hunting within a half mile of each other on our state ground.. You could not strike a coon there a lot of nights in January..
My first drop with the old dog last night, he treed four within a 1/4 mile recastinng.. Last time I dropped him there he went over a mile and treed on a den across the next road..
Weather and timing is everything, some of the guys were so frustrated with their dogs. Me toowith my pup in those conditions.
When it's a good night to hunt, hit it hard. When it's rough, leave the young dogs home and wait a minute.. Keep you from a lot of frustration and you will probably end up with a better dog in the end.
I know I could have avoided several deer and fox races if I'd kept the young dog home several of those nights - So trying to take my own advice going forward
Good coon tracks and conditions sure make a big difference in the enjoyment of our hunt at times.
public
I hunted public ground last nite ive hunted for at least 30 years. Drove about 3/4 mile off main road. I saw 3 coon crossing the road going in and 2 more setting up driving out. Never saw that many before in all the years ive hunted there. Coon were really moving. Unfortunately dog didnt do nearly as well.lol

It is unreal what a good night can show you as far as coon population goes. There are a ton around here, but its rare to see them for the 2 months of winter. You get a nice warm night in the spring and you are tripping over them.
I always like my pups born in june or July. They are perfect age right now and I know by a year old if it's something I'm interested in keeping.

Very end of Feb., early March is always when coon start moving around here... and really moving.. nothing to have a boar coon run for a mile before it trees right now.
On top of that, we had a week of -10 - -20 weather, then warmed up to a high of 50 yesterday and almost 60 today. Coons have really been moving. Some good hunting last night. My game cam showed coons moving from 9:00 p.m. - 4:30 a.m. It is 100% feast or famine when coons move here, sure enjoy these stretches.

interesting comments gents..
I never want another January pup lol - May would be ideal for me and well positioned for the SS - these Jan pups just got rolling and starting to put it together and we basically laid them up for 8 weeks due to weather.. Both are coming out of the gate looking strong though in great coon treeing weather..
Houndsound - you all ever jump a big cat at night coon hunting? think your all's trash (?) might get real exciting!!!
I drew an Idaho houndsman permit for next year.. gulp.. really starting to thing about that lion hunt out west...
Few videos from the other night. Taking tonight off to rest up for better weather this weekend..

You all still froze up Fisher13? We went back in the deep freeze Weds-thru Sat, but thawed out nice yesterday and appear to be on the downside of winter here.. Figure we will still have some cold and snow, but the worst of it behind us.. peepers just liable to be singing by the weekend here.. be real close.
I think we had our last really cold week, supposed to be really nice here next couple weeks .... Been seeing more nights like this:. https://youtu.be/ZnJ1rnm5wcU

The last couple nights, coon have been moving great. Tonight we tracked and treed 3 in less than an hour. Last night 3 in 1.5 hours. Dog didn't have to hunt far to hit a track.
