Pitiful

It is just pitiful to see grown people bash youth handlers or the dogs they are handling!
I have witnessed this more then once and really have to bite my tongue.

With this sport doing all it can to survive, making kids feel stupid is really not a great way to try to keep it alive.

THINK before you speak! If it so hard that you can't, one day, and I hope I am there, someone will give you something to THINK about!

Why are you biting your tongue? Say something

Posted by Bruce m. Conkey on 03-04-2019 01:21 PM:

.

My first thoughts were expressed in what Mr. Grant said.

Perhaps in the situation there was a lesson for the young person to learn. But remembering your talking to a young person and handling situations correctly is what separates many of us.

From what you said. I think two conversations from your side of the fence are warranted. One with you and the young person. To give them encouragement. The second is with the person you don't think is handling the situation with the young person correctly or bullying them around.
Calm gentle conversations in private can go a long ways to curing a lot of our problems.

We need to not dwell on our differences but share what we have in common.

I got shamed by a bench show judge once when young because the dog was fat. It was many years before I showed a dog again.

youth

You can never ever take for granted what a youth see or hears. I have been very surprised over the years of judging many youth events the relationships that I have found with these youth. The want you to help them, instruct them and give the tips on what they should or should not do to become better handlers.

If you ever watch me judge a youth show you will often see me speaking to the youth during or after the show. Giving them some tips or advice to help them grow in our sport. I little help and encouragement goes a long way and trust me they don't forget it. I have them come up to me many times after said event and tell me Ms. Lisa I have been working on what you told me can I show you... I will always take a minute to watch them and help in anyway.

Now granted some of our youth are very sore losers because the come from parents who are sore losers and they do not know any better. But I even try to encourage them too.

Always remember there is somebody that is always watching you... you may not know it but someone is watching ..

Ms Beddingfield, I think the same is true for a lot of older handlers also. I have always been very appreciative of any advice from a judge. It doesn't just hold true for our youth.

Very True Mr. Lambert.....

I learned so much when I started out by watching, listening to advice and asking lots of questions from many who have done this a lot longer than I have. The best part those are some of the best friends on the circuit I have now.... I have given advice to the older ones as well... never to old to learn ... I learn something new everyday...

Funny you say this. I was the same way.Never forgot my first registered bluetick.I was green as green could be and struggling to get my first win .I actually asked the breeder for help as he was one of the better noted handlers in this area.I have never and will never forget his reply to this day.He looked me straight and said "I learned the hard way and you will learn the hard way."And he refused to give me tip one.
I asked questions win or lose.Probably made a lot of judges mad.No, matter of fact I know I made them mad.
I was told by a higher up that I did not need to ask questions about why my dog won or lost .That I have been around long enough that I should know all I need to know and don't need to be asking why my dog lost.(I may still have that letter.)

Well any time anyone thinks they know it all and have nothing left to learn is already pretty stupid. And for this person to say this to me to this day, I think it was an ignorant stupid thing to say.

I have never ever refused to help anyone and do my best when anyone asks for help to give them all the knowledge I can possibly give .I have done youth events and give them the utmost help possible whether they ask for help or not when I see them struggling.

I hunted 3 hunts when I started coon hunting at 18, I'm 56 now, I remember how I was treated as a kid, swore I wouldn't hunt in another hunt again! And I haven't, I figured by now the hunts would have been a memory. I like pleasure hunting though.

Lonesome dove

It would depend on the situation. But my first thought when someone is being rude or just mean to a young person is the part in lonesome dove. You know after captain Cal beats the guy half to death than says hate Rude behavior in a man just won't tolerate it.
