Automatic Strike Dog?

I've always thought of the phrase as meaning a babbler that can't be caught by the judge because it always seems to eventually get treed. Am I wrong? If so, why would anyone openly advertise a dog for sale in this way? Yes, it can be an advantage in a comp. hunt, but really, who wants an obvious babbler?

Plenty. They are a very good scorecard dog and can win some $$$.

They gotta have a coon at the end though or it won't do a lick of good.

They are still coondogs.

Some of them were trained to do that, some babble naturally.

It is a distinct advantage in any registry that has a time allowed to babble (the minute on turn loose).

They are just being truthful about a dog for sale. It is a shame that more people aren't like that.

They are not what I like by any means, but if they have a coon at the end then I have no choice but to call them coondogs. Might not be my style but the goal is treeing coons and if they do that consistently then bad as I hate to admit it I have to give em credit for being a coondog.

Same as a silent dog isn't my kind of dog but if they tree coons I gotta call em coondogs LOL.

We all have different likes and dislikes in what we want in a dog though. Not throwing off on you or nothing, just explaining how I can call a babbler a coondog.

Ill take one ! A competition dog doesnt necessarily deem its an honest coon dog. Dogs are bred and trined to fit rules to win. Might not be right but its the truth.

People will take up for anything. Babbling is a fault and should not be accepted or tolerated and a babbler is by no means a coondog. Keep breeding and hunting and bragging on this garbage and see what kind of dogs you will have in 10 years.
But at the same time .. You are the one feeding it.. so if you like them my opinion is just an opinion.

From what I have seen over the years I think we are talking about two different kinds of dogs....as I see it, a babbler is one thing and the so-called "automatic strike" dog is another. The babbler is kind of obvious...he leaves out barking as soon as he is cut loose and happy barks like an idiot until he either shuts up or gets minus points. Generally this dog will shut up eventually and other dogs will at least have a chance at first strike. He is just mouthing off to be an idiot and mainly because nobody has beaten or shocked that ignorance out of him yet.
The automatic strike dogs as I have known them do not leave barking as soon as they are cut loose, but rather get out there a little ways and wait to start barking until they are at least in the kind of area where a coon is likely to be, such as right on the creek or in a swamp. Sometimes, probably most of the time, an automatic dog opens when he sees the other dogs acting the least bit excited. If another dog starts really working an area hard like he smells something or winds and runs in a certain direction, this is when the automatic dog sees it and opens. They tend to pay more attention to what the other dogs are doing than trying to find a coon themselves.
They can be a problem with a good handler because he will tree the dog just before the real dog doing the work hits the tree and have first strike and first tree. Many a nite champion was made this way.
I cannot stand a dog like that, but there are people that want them so yes they are advertised. In a sense I guess the automatic strike dog is really just a "me-too" dog that has taken it in a direction you can get something out of.
